Would rather and Would prefer mean the same thing.
Both are used with choices.

Would rather takes the simple form of a verb


Would rather + (not) + verb (simple form)

(-) Id rather not study today.
Would prefer takes the infinitive form of a verb:
Would prefer + (not) + infinitive
Id prefer to learn Russian.
Id prefer not to study this afternoon.
