• Artificial intelligence (AI) is the intelligence of
machines and the branch of computer science
that aims to create it. Textbooks define the
field as "the study and design of intelligent
agents" where an intelligent agent is a system
that perceives its environment and takes
actions that maximize its chances of success.
John McCarthy, who coined the term in 1956,
defines it as "the science and engineering of
making intelligent machines.
• Isaac Asimov wrote a series of books intelligent
robots with "positronic brains". The first of these,
called "I, Robot", was published in 1950
• In 1956, John McCarthy "Dartmouth Conference"
that the term Artificial Intelligence was first used.
• In 1960, Programs developed to play checkers,
draughts, noughts and crosses and other logical
games. Such as Deep Blue Chess-playing
program.
• In 1980, first movies used A.I (Star Wars) make
new popularity of the personal computers.
 The Persian Gulf War in the early 90's proved
the importance of AI research for military use.
(cruise missiles )
 Deep Blue Chess-playing program. Its been

used in 1997 triumph over World Chess

Champion.
 Utilize Oracle Databases is produced in 2000

such as Decision Support System , Expert

Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Artificial
Stupidity.
 Game playing: Chess
 Speech recognition
 Understanding natural language
 Computer vision
 Expert systems
 Heuristic classification (purchase by credit

 Civilian Uses
◦ Cleaning the house such as vacuum cleaner
◦ Writing an essay to check grammar errors
◦ Researching the net _search engine
◦ Security running an image recognition package
 Professional Uses
◦ Aeronautical science Weather radars designed to
cleverly detect wind shears, turbulence and other
such hazards.
◦ Gaming Quake2 and Unreal are showing some
interesting advances in AI.
◦ Medical science diagnoses such as x-ray.
◦ Military such as advanced autopilot features and
radar signal
◦ Music and Video Imagine computer composer, The
Terminator series.
• A speed-up of human professional or semi-
professional work- typically by a factor of ten and
sometimes by a factor of a hundred or more.
• Within companies, major internal cost savings. For
small systems, savings are sometimes in the tens or
hundreds of thousands of dollars; but for large
systems, often in the tens of millions of dollars and
as high as hundreds of millions of dollars. These cost
savings are a result of quality improvement, a major
motivation for employing expert system technology.
• Improved quality of decision making. In some cases,
the quality or correctness of decisions evaluated after
the fact show a ten-fold improvement.
• Preservation of scarce expertise. End Users
are used to preserve scarce know-how in
organizations, to capture the expertise of
individuals who are retiring, and to preserve
corporate know-how so that it can be widely
distributed to other factories, offices or
plants of the company.
• Introduction of new products. A good
example of a new product is a pathology
advisor sold to clinical pathologists in
hospitals to assist in the diagnosis of
diseased tissue.
