The University was established in 1874 and teaching Teaching

in 1876. The first official lecture was in Latin and the
Campuses
Bachelor of Arts the first degree offered. Curriculum & Assessment
However, the University's first Vice-Chancellor, Dr Augustus Short, had a vision for a university open to investigate
new fields such as the sciences, modern literature, art and moral philosophy; subjects other than the narrow
classics curriculum offered at Oxford University at the time. This vision would be realised in 1882 when the
University became the first in Australia to grant degrees in science.
The spirit of enquiry was further embraced and the freedom to explore non classical subjects continued. Before
reaching the 1900s the University offered degrees in arts, science, law, medicine and music. Additionally
mathematics, philosophy, languages and mining engineering were taught. These flagship degrees and disciplines
continue at the University today.
The University of Adelaide has built a rich
tradition of excellence to become a
leader in Australian higher education and
research.

There are many ways to be accepted to study at the University of Adelaide.
Campuses Curriculum & Assessment
Most students use their high school qualification and start after finishing year 12. If that doesnt apply to you, check out our non-school leavers
page which has info on alternative entry pathways and criteria.

Admission to all of our degrees is limited by quota (in other words, class size) so academic merit is used to determine entry.

If youve done year 12 and obtained your high school certificate (SACE or interstate equivalent ), your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)
is normally used to determine merit. Bonus points can also be added to your university aggregate before your final ATAR score is calculated.

Some courses (for example Medicine and Dentistry ) also have additional entrance criteria or pre-requisites such as the Undergraduate Medical
and Health Sciences Adnission Test (UMAT), and others (for example Music) have interviews or auditions.

Tuition fees are incurred each semester; the actual cost depends upon the degree you are studying and whether you are studying full/part-time.

To help cover the costs you can apply for HECS HELP or check out our scholarships website there might be something there for you.

Theres wide variety of undergraduate scholarships on offer, ranging from assistance for rural students and those in financial need right through
to scholarships for high-achieving students. Every scheme has different application requirements, so carefully read through that section of each
scholarship.
