HIGH SPEED TRAIN COMMUTING

AN OVERVIEW OF RAILWAYS IN INDIA


INDIAN RAILWAYS
INDIAN RAILWAYS IS A STATE OWNED NATIONAL TRANSPORTER,
RESPONSIBLE FOR RAIL TRANSPORT IN INDIA .
IT IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF
INDIA THROUGH THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS.
IT IS THE FOURTH LARGEST RAILWAY NETWORK IN THE
WORLD COMPRISING 119,630 KILOMETRES (74,330 MI) OF TOTAL
TRACK AND 92,081 KM (57,216 MI) OF RUNNING TRACK OVER A
ROUTE OF 66,687 KM (41,437 MI) WITH 7,216 STATIONS.
CURRENT SCENARIO

UTILISATION OF RAILWAYS HAS BEEN INCREASING STEADILY FOR THE


LAST DECADE.
THE DARKER SIDE
ACCORDING TO THE LATEST STATISTICS RELEASED BY THE
INDIAN RAILWAYS, AVERAGE SPEED OF A PASSENGER
TRAIN IN THE COUNTRY IS MERELY 36 KM/HR WHILE
GOODS TRAINS TRAVEL EVEN SLOWER WITH AN AVERAGE
SPEED OF JUST 26 KM/HR.
THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS DUE TO DERAILMENT HAS
ALSO CONSIDERABLY INCREASED IN THESE YEARS.

WHAT IS A PENDOLINO ?
PENDOLINO IS A HIGH SPEED TRAIN MANUFACTURED BY ALSTOM
FERROVIARIA.

IT TRAVELS AT SPEEDS UP TO 250 km/h ON CONVENTIONAL TRACKS,


ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR SPECIALLY LAID TRACKS.

THE NAME PENDOLINO COMES FROM AN ITALIAN WORD MEANING SMALL


PENDULUM DUE TO ITS MECHANISM TO TILT AT THE BENDS.

THERE ARE CURRENTLY APPROXIMATELY 400 PENDOLINO TRAINS


OPERATING IN 11 COUNTRIES ACROSS EUROPE, INCLUDING ITALY, PORTUGAL,
SLOVENIA, FINLAND, RUSSIA, UK, SWITZERLAND, CHINA, GERMANY AND
ROMANIA.
TECHNOLOGY

THE TRAIN USES TILTRONIX TECHNOLOGY FEATURING HYDRAULIC


TILTING BOGIES. THE TILTING RODS INSTALLED IN THE BOGIES
ACTIVATE TILTING.

THE TRAINS WHEEL FORCES HAVE BEEN MINIMISED BY REDUCING


SUSPENDED MASS.THE BODY SHELL SITS CENTRED WITH THE
USE OF ACTIVE LATERAL AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM.

TILTRONIX PROVIDES EITHER REACTIVE OR ANTICIPATIVE TILTING.
