DAMPING & STIFFNESS

Week 2 _ Nguyen Quang Minh _ MEC K58 _ 20132594

I. Stiffness
Definition: Stiffness is the resistance of an elastic body to deflection
or deformation by an applied force.

=

Where: k- stiffness ( N/m, lb/in)
F- applied force (N, lb)
- extension, deflection (m, in) (is the displacement produced
by the force along the same degree of freedom)
The objects are able to rotate around a point, we
also have the rational stiffness:

=

Where: F: applied moment
: displacement of rotation
II. Damping

Definition: A damping coefficient is a material property

that indicates whether a material will bounce back or
return energy to a system.
How to estimate?
The position, velocity and acceleration of a body
undergoing damped can be described by the
relationships:
= cos

v = sin
a = 2 cos
Where: A is the initial displacement
w is the angular frequency
d is the damping coffiecient
The acceleration at =
and =

a =

a = = ( +) ( +)
(1 ) 2
1 1

(2 ) (1 +)
