Ethanol Production From Straw

and corn waste

By Tung and Paul
What is a Biofuel

• Biofuels are fuels formed from compounds derived from plants

and animals
Why Develop them

• Biofuels are an indispensable development trend

• Technology is available which allows developing countries to make
fuel out of waste
• Hugely important in Transport
Our Project

Reaction

(Glucan)n → n Glucose Oligomer

(Glucan)n + ½n H2 O → ½n Cellobiose

(Glucan)n + n H2O → n Glucose

Cellobiose + H2O → 2 Glucose
Some Specifics

• The yeast we will be using is named Zymomonas mobils

• The fermentation process is carried out in a large tank with a
predetermined time to ferment sugar into ethanol for about 36h
• Straw is one of the richest lignocellulosic residues in the world. Its
annual output is about 731 million tonnes distributed in Africa,
Asia, Europe and America
