Remote Sensing

What is Remote Sensing?

 Remote sensing
(RS) is a method
of obtaining
information from
distant objects
without direct
contact.
How is this possible?

 This is possible due

to the existence or
the generation of
force fields
between the
sensing device
and the sensed
object.
Electromagnetic Energy

A form of energy that is

reflected or emitted from
objects in the form of electrical
and magnetic waves that can
travel through space.
Remote Sensing in terms of Civil
Engineering

 Used to gain data regarding the

Earth

 Collects data in spatial form

Geospatial Data

 Aninformation about physical

objects that can be represented by
numerical values in a geographic
coordinate system

Regional Planning and Site
Investigation
 It requires topographical and geological information
Dam Site Investigation

Information on
topography
such as type of
terrain
Dam Site Investigation

 Geological considerations also matter and include data regarding

the different soil and rock types present at the site
Dam Site Investigation

 In selecting river crossing

sites for bridges and
pipelines, an important
consideration is the
stability of slopes leading
down and up from the
water crossing. Such
slopes include riverbank
terrace faces and valley
wall
Dam Site Investigation

 History of river erosion and sedimentation

Photogrammetry or Photographic
Survey

 The use of photographs to gain knowledge

regarding the photographed objects and
entities

 It may employ high-speed imaging and remote

sensing in order to detect, measure, and record
complex 2-D and 3-D motion fields (Sonar,
Radar, Lidar, etc.)
Sonar (Sound Navigation and
Ranging)

 A technique that uses

sound propagation (usually
underwater, as an
submarine navigation) to
navigate, communicate
with or detect objects on or
under the surface of the
water, such as other vessels
Radar

 An object-detection system
that uses radio waves to
determine the range,
altitude, direction of
objects. It can be used to
direct aircraft, ships, space
crafts, guided missiles,
motor vehicles, weather
information, and terrain
Lidar

A remote sensing
technology that
measures distance
by illuminating a
target with a laser
and analysing the
reflected light.
