Revision: Muscle Structure
Motor Neurone
• Neurone: alpha-motoneurone
Motor Unit
• Definition: Group of muscle fibres (i.e. cells)
innervated by a single alpha-motoneurone.
Synapse: NMJ & Endplate
Not typical of brain synapses!

SYNAPSE!
Neurone Neurone / Muscle fibre

Endplate:
Large and complex end
formation by which the axon of a
motor neuron establishes
synaptic contact with a skeletal
muscle fibre

Sort of like a ‘handprint’ onto

the muscle!
Synaptic Transmission
Synaptic Transmission
• Acetylcholine: Rapidly broken down and
inactivated
• Synthesis: Acetyl-CoA + Choline → Acetylcholine
(Enzyme: Cholineacetylase; Site: Terminal bouton)
• Breakdown: Acetylcholine → Acetic acid + Choline
(Enzyme: Acetylcholinesterase; Site: Synaptic cleft)
Recycled into terminal
bouton by uptake pumps!
Synaptic Transmission
• Synaptic vesicles
ACTION POTENTIAL!

Vesicle

Synaptobrevins

Syntaxins
