(Rebecca, Emelda & Melie)
 Communication
the way in which people talk, write, respond and
impart information or news with each other using
a variety of formats to reach diverse audiences
 Collaboration
is a 21st century essential skill where 2 or more
individuals achieve meaningful and effective
results from working together on any given
problem-solving or inquiry-based investigations;

Creativity
using original ideas and innovation to
produce content that has purpose,
audience and a community
Critical Thinking
An analysis of thought and facts and impart
a judgement; being problem solvers and
problem finders

4C Learning in a Curriculum
 Collaboration: eg. Students working with other classes,
communicating with people around the world to solve problems or work
together towards a common goal.
 Demonstrate ability to work effectively and respectfully with
diverse teams. Exercise flexibility and willingness to be helpful in
making necessary compromises to accomplish a common goal.
Assume shared responsibility for collaborative work, and value
the individual contributions made by each team member.
 Creativity: eg. Students research and design, create and implement
innovative solutions, solve and decipher social justice issues, interpret “found
essays” around a central theme.
 Thinking, working with others, and innovation to produce new
and novel ideas, solve problems, and understand the process of
learning and the place of failure.

4C Learning in a Curriculum
 Health Sciences – (Melie R. Sia)
Above all of the other 4C’s, Critical Thinking is
an integral part of the curriculum of teaching
Health Sciences (Biology, Anatomy and
Physiology) where “Experimentation Activities”
provide students the opportunities to discover,
to think and to predict the possible outcome.

4C Learning in a Curriculum
(Rebecca Segar)
 Communication: eg. Students communicate a point of view, are clear
& concise, and articulate, make meaning through writing and produce
products to be viewed by world-wide audience.
 Articulate thoughts and ideas effectively using oral, written, and
nonverbal communication skills in a variety of forms and contexts.
Listen effectively to decipher meaning, including knowledge, values,
attitudes, and intentions. Use communication for a range of purposes.
Use multiple media and technologies, and know how to assess impact
and their effectiveness a priori` Communicate effectively in diverse
environments .
 Critical Thinking: eg. Students articulate different ways to solve a
problem, given a problem students can find a solution through research and
collaboration, utilize social networking to interview community partners and
enlist their support in finding solutions to issues.
 Using systems thinking, making judgments and decisions, and problem
solving.

4C Integration Benefits to Students
(Melie R. Sia)
 It inspires the student to create a vision of how to make
the world a better place for everyone;
 It empowers the student to carry out his vision to be
successful in life, founded on fair core values;
 It prepares students become effective citizens and
participants in the new global economy;
 It develops student’s competitive edge in the global
arena of task automation, innovative capacity and
original creative ability;

Challenges of Integrating Skills
into Instruction
 Collaboration – (Melie R. Sia)
Of all the 4C’s, “Collaboration” presents the most
challenging skill that my students struggles to apply,
in the classroom.
 Majority of them prefer to work alone, and don’t want to
work with their classmates.
 There is the lack of trust that the project will be
completed correctly
 There is the strong desire to be independent and doing
things in his/her own ways and style.

Challenges of Integrating Skills
into Instruction (Emelda Hale)
 The challenge today is to incorporate these
essential skills into schools deliberately across the
curriculum in the context of progressively
more challenging problems, projects, and through
active
involvement with diverse communities and real
world challenges Integrative learning .
 Classroom teachers need to be familiar with
these skills and integrate them throughout the
curriculum. They must be able to sort through large
masses of materials and identify key problems and
create resources for Integrating 21st
Century Skills into Content Areas.

How might you help students grow in the
“C” that you emphasize the least?
 Rebecca Segar - Creativity
I need to work on implementing innovation with students.
I could increase opportunities for my students to publish their work to an
audience outside of their school building.
I could connect students with real scientists via an online forum.
I could continue to support students in their engineering design process, in
particular the re-design and getting them to connect with advanced learners or
experts in the field.

How might you help students grow in the
“C” that you emphasize the least?
 Emelda Hale - Viewpoints
 Students in this 21st century are required to acquire these 4C skills: Critical
thinking,
 Communication, Collaboration and Creativity. These skills can be integrated
in the teaching and learning through innovative teaching that promotes
active and meaningful learning. One way of integrating these skills is through
collaborative knowledge and creativity. However, it is not easy to develop all
of these skills among our students.
 One of the most important things we must remember is that, the teachers
must have the expertise / knowledge to be able to acquire and maximize
the use of the 4C’s to learning. Instructional design is an important element
to enhance instruction. Every instruction must be carefully design and based
upon educational theories. In my class, I observe that Creativity is quite
challenging. Since my students are now dependent to technology, they
seem to be less creative because they look at things from similar
perspectives. They are not well challenged in terms of making projects and
by what the technology could offer because everything is provided.

How might you help students grow in the
“C” that you emphasize the least?
 Melie R Sia - Critical Thinking
 My critical observation of my students is their tendency to expect things to be
fed to them. Oftentimes, they exert less effort in using their “critical thinking”
ability when not guided well.
 As a solution, I help my students by providing them “Guide Questions” and
“Starter Statements” when Writing their Daily Journal Writing.
 e.g. “What is Lung Cancer?”, “Why is smoking a bad habit”? “If smoking is the No.#1 cause
for Lung Cancer, why is smoking allowed in USA”?
 “Personal Interview with adults” is another homework given to students to test
some of their predictions:
 e.g. (1) survey Interview at least 20 adults, and tally their responses (2) Draw conclusions from
the results of your interview/ survey.
 “Are you in favor of legalizing the use of Medicinal Marijuana” in Mary land? Why?

How will you integrate technology to enhance
that "C" in your instruction?
 Rebecca Segar
On-line teleconferencing:
 google hangouts or skype,

 Pinterest for brainstorms,

 use of twitter for documentation of my journey and for advice from

colleagues and other teacher globally.

How will you integrate technology to enhance
that "C" in your instruction?
 Melie R Sia
Students will use technology (Phone camera, video camera,) in taking video
responses of the person being interviewed for their survey on the legalization
of the use of Medicinal Marijuana.
 Use of calculator to compute and tally the results
 Use of Computer and M.S. Office Suites in documenting Results (M.S, Word Docs, Notes,
etc.) and Presenting or reporting to class or teacher (M.S. Power Point, M.S. Excel, M.S.
Publisher, etc.)
