Objectives
On completion of this session, you would be
able to

• Do the problems on Chezy’s equation and Manning’s

formula for finding the discharge in open channel flow

9C304.63 2
Recap

• In the previous session, you have learnt

Solving problems on most economical rectangular

and trapezoidal channel sections

9C304.63 3
Problems

1) A Rectangular channel is 4 meters deep and 6

meters wide. Find the discharge through channel
when it runs full. Take slope of the bed as 1 in 1000
and chezy’s constant is 50.

9C304.63 4
• Given Data
• Depth d =4m
• Width b = 6m, A= 4*6 = 24 m2
• Perimeter P = b+2d=6+(2*4)=14m
• Hydraulic mean depth (m) = A/P=24/14=1.71 m
• Bed slope (i) = 1/1000=0.001
• Velocity of water (v) =?
• Discharge of water (Q) =?
• Chezy’s constant (C) = 50

9C304.63 5
Substitute the values in Chezy’s equation we get the value
of velocity in the open channel

2) An earthen channel with a base 3m and 4 meters wide
at top with side slopes 1:1 carries water with a depth of
1m,The bed slope is 1 in 1600. Estimate the discharge
Take value of N in Manning's formula as 0.04.

9C304.63 8
Given Data
Depth d =1m ,n:1=1:1
Width b = 3m, A=(b + nd) d
= (3+1*1)*1 = 4 m2
Perimeter P = b+2d √ n2+1
=3+2*1 √ 12+1 =5.82 m
Hydraulic mean depth (m) =A/P =4/5.82=0.69m
Bed slope (i) = 1/1600
Manning's constant =0.04

9C304.63 9
Substitute the values of A,N,m,i in Manning’s equation
we get the value of Discharge“ Q “ in the open channel

Discharge through channel is find out by

Q=A x V

 4 * 0.489  1.956m3 / s.
