Plastering

The process of covering masonry walls and other surfaces

with a plastic binding material of plaster or mortar.

Mortar is made with cement and sand or lime and sand.

• To protect against vermin nuisance

• To act as a base for colour washing ,painting

or distempering

9C406.45 6
Types of plastering based on materials used
• Mud plastering

• Lime plastering

• Cement plastering

• Cement lime mortar

9C406.45 7
Procedure of plastering

• Surface preparation

• Preparation of mortar

• Application of mortar

• Finishing

• Curing

9C406.45 8
Preparation of Surface
• Roughening: The surface to be plastered should
be roughed for improving the bonding with plaster
• Cleaning: All the joints should be raked to remove
the loose materials if any
• Daubing: The holes and depressions if any should
be filled with mortar so as to make the surface even
• Wetting: The surface should be moistened before
application of plaster to avoid loss of water content
in plaster

Plastering with cement mortar

Preparation of mortar

• Cement mortar of (1:4) or (1:5) is used for plastering

• Cement and sand are mixed thoroughly in dry condition

• Required quantity of water is added

• Contents are thoroughly mixed by hand for small works

and by mechanical mixers for large works

Plastering with cement mortar
Application of mortar

This can be done in

• single coat
12mm thick for Brick walls, 20mm thick for Stone
Masonry
• double coat
20mm for Brick walls in two layers (12mm first coat
and 8mm second coat)

9C406.45 11
Plastering with cement mortar one coat

• Patches of 150mm x 150mm Plaster guides of

required thickness prepared not more than 2m
intervals over the entire surface

• This patches are called guides

• The mortar is applied between the guides with

trowel

9C406.45 12
Plastering with cement mortar one coat

• The mortar applied should have a thickness slightly more

than specified

• The mortar surface then worked with a long wooden float

with small sawing swing to bring the surface true level

• The surface is then racked with iron brush to provide a

proper bond

Application of second coat

• The sand used for this second coat should be of size

150 to 600 microns
• The mortar is applied with trowel for a thickness of 8mm
• Then the surface is rubbed with a wet sponge and then
with a dry sponge to obtained smooth finish

9C406.45 16
