Chinese Calendar
Features of the Traditional Chinese
Calendar
It is basically lunar.
It has 12 months, with each starting as a new moon. When
it reached the midpoint, a full moon will appear.
The 12 months is like 12 lunation.
12 lunation consists of a total of 354 days.
So, the individual lunation might consist of about 29-30
days.
Problem and solutions when improving the
Chinese Calendar
Problem: The
development of the calendar and the
establishing of the seasons, holidays and the New
Year was too scientific and complicated for most
of the people to understand.
Solution:
Thus, in order to solve the problem, people
created some stories and folk tales to minimize
the explanation and to simplify its explanation.
Advantage and disadvantage of the Chinese
Calendar
The advantage of a “lunar calendar” is that it
accurately represents the moon’s changes of phase.
But, the disadvantage being that every “lunar calendar
year” is 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar
year, thereby causing a difference of 6 months every 17
years. As a result, our summer would move into
January, and winter will to June - an agricultural
nightmare.
The origin of the Chinese Calendar
The first calendar, according to the Historical Records
written about 90 B.C., is attributed to Huang-Ti who
orders the study of the stars by the astronomer at his
court. It was his minister that produced the first
calendar.
Reflection of the Project
I learnt that even people from the past is very great.
They invented the calendar that we used now,
although that there have been some improvement
made to minimize the errors. So, we should keep
improving ourselves and researching to made
improvement to give better benefits for the future
generation. By doing this project, we can learn more
about the origins of the calendar.
