FIXTURES

Presented by:- Sandeep

INTRODUCTION

 Mass production aims at high productivity to reduce unit

cost.
 Interchangeability to facilitate easy assembly.
 Necessitates production devices to increase the rate of
manufacturing.
 Inspection devices to speed-up inspection procedure.
PRODUCTION DEVICES(JIGS and FIXTURE)

 Production devices are generally work holders with

/without tool setting/guiding arrangement.

 JIGS-
 A device that holds the
work and locates hr path of
the tool.
 Provided with tool guiding
element.
 Direct the tool to the
correct position.
FIXTURE

 What is fixture?
 A device fixed to the worktable
of a machine and locates the
work in an exact position to the
relative to the cutting tool.
 Tool is note guided.

 Clamped to the machine table.

MATERIAL USED IN FIXTURE

 High speed steel(HSS)

 Carbon steel
 Case hardening steel
 High tensile steel
 Mild steel
 Cast iron
 Nylon and fibre
 Phospher bronze
PRESENTATION OF WORKPIECE
PURPOSE OF USING FIXTURE

 Drilling without fixture-

elementary steps are to be
followed...
 Marking
 Punching
 Alignment checking
 Vice positioning etc.

 So many operations are needed to be carried out

carefully and skilfully bye machinist.
PURPOSE OF USING FIXTURE

 Purposes of using fixture in

machining shops are-
 To eliminate marking , punching ,
positioning, alignment etc.
 Easy, quick and accurate location.
 Increase in productivity
 Maintain product quality.
 To reduce operator’s labour and
skill- requirement.
 To reduce measurement.
 To reduce overall machining cost
 Increase interchangeability.
DESIGN CONSIDERATION FOR FIXTURES

 To fulfil their basic purpose , fixture are

comprised of several elements.
 Base and frame with clamping feature
 Locating element
 Supporting surface and base
 Fastening parts
Locating , Supporting And Clamping Of Job In Fixtures

 It has to be assured that

the blank , once fixed or
clamped ,does not move
at all.
 Any body may have
maximum twelve degree
of freedom .
By Properly Locating , Supporting And Clamping The Blank Its
All Degree Of Freedom Are To Be Arrested...

 The three adjacent locating

surface of the blank are
resting against 3,2, and 1 pins,
which prevent 9 degree of
freedom.
 The rest three degree of
freedom are arrested by three
external forces usually
provided directly by
clamping.
