WHAT IS TRANSNATIONAL AMERICAN
STUDIES?

First of all, we are going to take a look of the definition

of the transnational itself. According to Merriam -Webster
dictionary transnational is “extending or going beyond national
boundaries” which mean that Transnational American Studies is
a study about how the Americanism in culture, economic,
politic, ideology, etc spreaded around the world beyond national
boundaries and give impact to the whole world as the part of
globalization process.
ABOUT TRANSNATIONALISM

Transnationalism is a term used in many disciplines: the

social sciences, anthropology, sociology, international law,
economics, and cultural studies. A prominent keyword in these
fields, it is nonetheless a contested term. Although there have
always been the transnational phenomena of migration and
movement, transnationalism—as it is commonly used today—
expresses a contemporar y condition, one that is vitally associated
with a economy, finance capital, and flexible accumulation. This is
especially marked in the ways that globalized corporations, large-
scale flows of capital and information, and migrator y workforces
have become more dominant within late capitalist modernity. In
this context, transnationalism refers to a profoundly felt
interconnectivity between people and places. It gestures toward the
ways in which people, ideas, and goods traverse regions or nation-
states, the interconnections of which have been intensified by
twenty -first-century modes of telecommunications and
transportation that enable the hyperswift crisscrossing of both
commodities and capital.
HOW TRANSNATIONALISM IMPACT THE
WORLD
According to Neil Campbell and Alasdair
Kean in their book American Cultural Studies An
Introduction to American Culture we conclude
that the spread of the American Culture in
transnationalism and globalization are mostly
from the World War I, WW II, Cold War and war in
Vietnam. This war has a major role on spreading
American Culture throughout the world. In war
often we can find the propaganda and the
political ideology doctrine that have a role in
transnationalism. The war also provides contact
of two cultures across the border of the nation
that makes diversion and cross cultural process
of the culture and everything else about it.

AMERICANIZATION AS A PART OF
TRANSNATIONALISM

Since a part of transnationalism in American studies are studying

about how America has influenced the world, Americanization will
play a pivotal role in the discussion.
Americanization is the influence American culture and business
have on other countries, such as their media, cuisine, business
practices, popular culture, technology, political techniques and/or
climate. The term has been used since at least 1907. While not
necessarily a pejorative term, it is most often used by critics in the
target country who are against the influences of the United States.
Americanization has been more prevalent, or at least perceived to
be more prevalent, since the collapse of the Soviet Union (1991) –
leaving the US to be the remaining superpower – and the rise of
the Internet, in which the major, pivotal companies were American
companies (Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, and so on).

INFLUENCE OF OTHER COUNTRIES TOWARDS
THE UNITED STATES
Just like the United States has influenced the rest of the world,
the world (par ticularly immigrants) has influenced the United States.
Progressive politics used by European countries becomes one of the
main ‘selling points’ of the Democratic par ty on many fronts, such as
univer sal healthcare , cheaper college education in exchange for
increased taxes.
Many foods now considered staple American food has been
brought by immigrants. For example, apple pie was brought by the
Dutch, British and Swedes during the 1 8 th Centur y. Hot dogs and
hamburger s were originally brought to the US by the Germans during the
surge of German immigrants in the late 19 th centur y and early 20 th
centur y, but now they were considered staple American food.
Pizza were brought by the Italians in around the same era, but
now variations of pizza were more considered American (eg. New York-
style pizza)
BBQ were originally invented by slaves during the slaver y era (which
were impor ted), and now is considered a typical American food in the
South.
