Motivation Behind the problem
• More than a half of global aluminum production uses the Direct
Chill casting process.
• Yet the making of the ingot of it doesn’t have many solved
computational analysis.
• Which interests me to work on the most important and unsolved
problem in the industry.
• Although, we have some good computer simulation software's
like ANSYS, COMSOL, Hyper Mesh, etc
• Many faces the simulation challenge in calculating the mass flow
and the evolution of the solidification process.
Problem Formulation
• I’m willing to address the central line segregation problem.
• It is the process of distributing the heat input radially, using
methods like MCDC Casting.
• Where a vibrating fork is placed in the central region and given
a frequency to it, accelerates the heat exchange and thereby
reducing the sump depth.
• Simulating the exact process at industrial scale computationally
allows to accurately measure the required parameters.
• The left shows the MCDC Casting with a rotor to reduce the
sump height.
• I would like to work on ultrasonic vibrational setup to do the
same but with much less mechanical stresse.
• In this case the simulation of the temperature distribution was
done but the flow simulation of the same is a challenging one,
which I’m over.
Methodology
• Computation simulation in ANSYS
• Geometry (axisymmetrical 2d plane)
• FVM Meshing
• CFXSetup
• Heat exchange – on
• Viscosity kε formulation
• Acoustics
• Boundary conditions
• Post processing
• Contours (Temperature and Massflow)
• Particle track
Expected outcome
• The flow contours and the reduction of the sump height based on
various frequency and depths of the shaft.
• Solidification procedure.
• Temperature bands for the same.
