Brief Overview
• Approx. 4 billion hectares of forested land globally and 71 million
hectares in India

• Deforestation trend globally but in India forest cover is either same


or increasing over the past decade

• Forestry contributes to 1% of GDP globally and 2% in India

• Fuel wood and pulp for paper are the two major products. Others
are medicinal plants, resins, latex, fragrance and aroma chemicals

• The forestry market is highly segregated and unorganised. No clear
market leaders have emerged

• Majority population depends on forests for fuel either directly or


indirectly

• 275 to 350 million livelihoods depend on forest industry

• Logging Industry uses outdated machinery and suffers from


corruption and illegal trade.
