AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is the presence of chemicals in
the atmosphere in concentrations high
enough to harm organisms, ecosystems, or
human made materials, or to alter climate
(Miller,2016:370).
SOURCES OF AIR
POLLUTION
Air pollution derives from a variety of sources, of which
the combustion of fossil-fuel products is the principal
source.

INDOOR AND OUTDOOR
POLLUTANTS
Indoor air pollution is also a
serious problem in developed
areas of all countries, mostly
because of chemicals used in
building materials and products.
•Sources: cooking and
combustion, air conditioning,
consumer products, smoking,
heating, biologic agents,etc.
•Products: Combustion products
(eg, tobacco and wood smoke),
CO, CO2, SVOC (eg, aldehydes,
alcohols, alkanes, and ketones),
etc.
INDOOR AND OUTDOOR
POLLUTANTS
Outdoor air pollutant is
often referred to as
ambient air. The common
sources of outdoor air
pollution are emissions
caused by combustion
processes from motor
vehicles, solid fuel
burning and industry.
Products: SO2, ozone,
NOx, CO, PM, SVOC

areas where urban smog, particle
pollution, and toxic pollutants pose
serious health concerns.

INDICATORS OF AIR POLLUTION
The hardy lichens are useful bioindicators for air pollution, espeially
sulfur dioxide pollution, since they derive their water and essential
nutrients mainly from the atmosphere rather than from the soil.

SOLUTION
• Laws and Regulations Can Reduce Outdoor Air Pollution
The United States provides an excellent example of how a regulatory approach can
reduce air pollution. The U.S. Congress passed the Clean Air Acts in 1970, 1977, and
1990. With these laws, the federal government established air pollution regulations for
key pollutants that are enforced by states and major cities.
