CONVENTIONAL PRACTICAL EXAMS
• lack scope for direct observation by evaluator
• limited coverage contents
• subjective
OSPE (OBJECTIVE STRUCTURED
PRACTICAL EXAMINATION)
• Derived from OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Exam) by Harden &
Gleeson 1975
• test students what they can do rather than what they know
• reported to be a good substitute for Coventional Practical Exam
because it is more objective ( Hasan, Malik, Hamad, Khan & Bilal,
2009)
• used worldwide in various medical courses like Pharmacology,
Biochemistry, physiology etc. (Deshpande, 2013)
OSPE
ADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
• can assess a range of attributes not easily • lot of effort to set up
accomplished via traditional assessment
methods • need back up plans
• students can try much harder to succeed as
they cannot hide behind written work
• it is easily adaptable for different
skills/disciplines
• fast and easy way to assess practical skills in
large groups
• (Scott & Jenkinson, University of Aberdeen)

Objectives
• This study aims to evaluate OSPE as a method of formative and summative
assessment of practical skills of MLS courses with laboratory component to find out
the feasibility and acceptability of this method of examination. Specifically, it seeks to
achieve the following:

• a.Plan and implement OSPE with the psychomotor domain learning processes through
a TOS (knowledge, perception, set, guided response, mechanism, adaptation, and
origination) vis-à-vis the learning outcomes identified for a grading period in each
course.
• b.Compare the mean score of the students in the MLS courses using the conventional
practical examination (CPE) with OSPE (Objective Structured Practical Examination).
• c.Describe students’ perspectives regarding OSPE as tool of assessment.
Methods
• Evaluative Research Design
• 1- OSPE exam
• 2- Conventional Practical Exam

• 6 months duration
• Questionnaires
