Style is the special way of the author’s expression. In the
author’s words, style is the personality of the author. It is often
called literary style represented among other by methapor and
personification style.

Kenney in his book “How to analyze Fiction” (1966: 62-63)


Figurative language uses figures of speech to be more effective,
persuasive, and impactful. Figures of speech such as metaphors,
similes, and allusions go beyond the literal meanings of the words
to give readers new insights.

The term figurative language covers a wide range of literary devices and techniques, a
few of which include :

1. Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that make a comparison, showing similarities between
two different things.

2. Metaphor
Metaphor is a figure of speech that makes an implicit, implied, or hidden comparison
between two things that are unrelated, but which share some common characteristics.

3. Personification
Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an animal – is given
human attributes. The non-human object are portrayed in such a way that we feel they
have the ability to act like human beings.

4. Hyperbole
Hyperbole is a figure of speech that involves an exaggeration of ideas for the sake of
emphasis.
5. Idiom
The term idiom refer to a set expression or a phrase comprising two or
more words.

6. Contrast
Contrast is comparison between two people / things / place / event to
show the difference between them.

7. Imagery
Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions,
and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses.

8. Irony
Irony is a figure of speech in which words are use in such a way that
their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the
words.
1. Metaphor
A way of comparing two or more things without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Example :
“The baking part was the next thing to be considered, and how I should make bread when I
came to have corn..” (p.155)

2. Smile
Comparison between two things which are unlike but have something in common.

Example :
“He ate it like a ravenous wolf” (p.187)

3. Contrast
Comparison between two people / things / place / events to show the difference between them.

Example :
The contrast between the civilized Robinson Crusoe and the savage.
At the start of the novel, Robinson Crusoe seeks freedom from England and desperately wants
to go seafaring. In the end, he is virtual prisoner on his own island.
4. Personification
Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing – an idea or an
animal – is given human attributes. The non-human object are portrayed in
such a way that we feel they have the ability to act like human beings.

Example :
“The wave that came upon me again buried me twenty or thirty feet
deep in it own body” (p.45)

5. Imagery
Imagery means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions, and
ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses.

Example :
“My heart sunk within me at the horror of the spectacle” (p.201)
This novel about Robinson Crusoe, an Englishman who has a
great desire to see the outside world. When his friend offers him to
go sailing, he doesn’t need to think too long to accept it. Robinson
left his parents – who did not give up his departure – and began
his adventure. First sailing, Robinson had vowed to return to
England and would not sail again. However, over time he enjoy his
adventures. Throughout the “Freedom”, Robinson had become a

The uniqueness of the novel’s story lies in way of storytelling
that uses a first-person perspective, make the reader of this novel
seem to read a travel diary. The style of language is very simple,
and make this novel not only to be enjoyed by adult, but also
teenagers who love adventure stories.
