Q2

Apply disk and cylindrical shell methods to calculate the

volume of the solid formed by revolving the region bounded
by 𝒚 = 𝒙, 𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙, 𝒚 = 𝟐, about the 𝒙-axis.

i. Clearly show the two methods’ selection by choosing

differential elements to calculate the volume in each case?

i. Evaluate your answer.

Q3
A plate of unitary areal density has the
shape shown
i. Construct an integration to calculate the
moment of inertia about the 𝒙-axis.
ii. Calculate the moment of inertia about
the 𝒙-axis.
iii.Repeat calculating the moment of inertia
about the y-axis.
Q4
The box shown in the Figure contains oil
of density 932 kg/m3. The opening at
location 𝑨 is a triangle of 0.75 m height
and 0.75 m base.

i. Set all parameters that are required to

calculate the hydrostatic force acting on
the opening 𝑨.

ii. Generate an integration to calculate the

hydrostatic force on the opening 𝑨.

iii. Calculate the hydrostatic force.

Q6

A cylindrical tank 4 m in diameter is lying on its side and is half full of

water of specific volume ( 𝜸 = 𝟗𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝑵Τ𝒎𝟑 ). Use integration to
formulate steps lead to find the total force exerted on one end of the
tank using 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝑹𝟐 , where 𝑹 is the radius of the cylindrical tank.
i. Draw a side view for the cylinder and then show the axial view (the
end of the cylinder). Show this end in 𝒙𝒚-coordinating system.
What are the parameters needed to find the force?

ii. Formulate an integration to calculate the force.

Q7

A cylindrical tank 4 m in diameter and 6 m in length is lying on its side

and is half full of water of specific volume (𝜸 = 𝟗𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝑵Τ𝒎𝟑 ). Use
integration to formulate steps lead to find the required work to empty
the tank to height of 7 m above the axial center. You may use the
equation of the circle 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 = 𝑹𝟐 , where 𝑹 is the radius of the
cylindrical tank.
i. Draw a side view for the cylinder and then show the axial view (the
end of the cylinder). Show this end in 𝒙𝒚-coordinating system.
What are the parameters needed to find the required work?

ii. Formulate an integration to calculate the work.
