CHE3723 – Safety in Process Plant Design

Tutorial 1
Lecturer : Eunice Phang S.W.
Chapter 1

1. An employee works in a plant with a FAR of 4. If this employee works a 4-hr shift, 200 days per
year, what are the expected deaths per person per year?
2. Three process units are in plant. The units have FARs of 0.5, 0.3 and 1.0 respectively.
a. What is the overall FAR for the plant, assuming worker exposure to all three units
simultaneously?
b. Assume now that the units are far enough apart that an accident in one would not affect the
workers in another. If the worker spends 20% of his time in process area 1, 40% in process
area 2, and 40% in process area 3, what is his overall FAR?

Chapter 2:

3. Determine the concentration of ethylene oxide that will cause a 50% fatality rate if the exposure
occurs for 30 min.
4. Use equation 2-7 to convert TLV in ppm to the TLV in mg/m3 for benzene, carbon monoxide &
chlorine. Assume 25°C and 1 atm.
5. Determine the potential deaths resulting from the following exposure to chlorine:
a. 200ppm for 15 min; 100ppm for 5 min; 50ppm for 2 min
6. Determine the duration times, in minutes, in which a group of 100 people can be expose to
1500ppm of carbon monoxide to result in
a. 0% fatalities
b. 50% fatalities
7. Estimate the exposure concentration in ppm that will result in fatalities for 80% of the exposed
individuals if they are exposed to phosgene for 4 min.
8. Use the NIOSH website to determine the number of deaths that occurred in 1992 as a result of
asbestos. (www.cdc.gov/niosh)
