WORD, PHRASE, COMPOUND SENTENCE AND

COMPLEX SENTENCE.

Based on Oxford dictionary “Word” is :
A single distinct meaningful element of speech or
writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a
sentence and typically shown with a space on either side
when written or printed.

The function of words depend on where they are in the


sentence, or what endings we attach to them,it performs
different functions in a sentence. Simplified for the purpose
of this grammar, these functions are :
-Subjects, verbs, direct objects, indirect objects, modifiers and
Function words.
A group of words is having no subject verbs combination. It has no
meaning if used alone but, if used in a sentence has a unique meaning.
E.g : a beautiful
Different types of Phrase :
1. Noun Phrase
2. Verb Phrase
Formula :
1.Noun Phrase
- Adjective + Noun
- Adverb + Adjective + Noun
E.g :
- Handsome Boy
- Really Handsome Boy.
2. Verb Phrase
- Verb + Adverb
- Adverb + Verb
E.g :
- Shouted Angrily
- Carefully Moved
A simple sentence has just one independent clause.
 An independent clause has one subject and one
verb. An example of an independent clause is
the sentence:
-I went to the beach.
which has one subject, the pronoun 'I,' and one
verb, 'went.‘

A simple sentence has no dependent clauses.


A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses
joined together with a coordinator such as for, and or but.

 Coordinator
There are seven coordinators in the English Language:
-For
-And
-Nor
-But
-Or
-Yet
-So
When you have two independent clauses joined by one of these
coordinators,
that is a compound sentence. Usually a comma is required, before the
coordinator.
A complex sentence has one independent
clause and at least one dependent clause.
An independent clause (unlike a dependent
clause) can stand alone as a sentence.

E.g :
1. When the cost goes up, customers buy less
clothing.
2. Although very long, the movie was still
enjoyable.
