General Information About Dams in Turkey

 The dam has been built since ancient times to meet the water needs of humanity, to
generate electricity and to irrigate agricultural areas. Modern dams of today have
strategic importance.
 There are 504 dams built and operated by DSİ in Turkey, 203 of them are in the form of
large-scale dam and others in the form of ponds.
 It will be more accurate to
subject the dams in Turkey to two
separate rankings in height and
size.

 Atatürk Dam is the 6th largest dam in the world in terms of fill volume. Hydroelectric Power
Plant is the 3rd largest power plant in the world which are under construction right now
and the 5th largest power plant which are already built in the world. It is also Europe's
largest dam. The Atatürk Dam was carried out entirely with the labor and the heiress of the
Turkish workers and engineers. The body of this giant dam was completed in a short period
of 80 months.
 The average annual water flow is 26 654 billion m3. Total water storage volume of 48.7
billion m3.

 Deriner Dam and HEPP is located on the Çoruh River in the Eastern Black Sea Region and 5
km from the bridge over the State Highway connecting Artvin Province Center to Erzurum
Province.

 The dam will cover 6% of the hydroelectric power produced in TURKEY. 1 billion 970 million
m3 of water will be stored in the dam.
