Objectives of 5S Principles

■ To create a work environment which is safe, healthy, productive, has high quality,
comfortable for employees to work, use only the required sources, easy to manage &
profitable.
5S PHILOSOPHY

■ Productivity comes from the elimination of “MUDA”


■ Attack the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms
■ Requires the participation of EVERYONE!
■ Acknowledge that the human being is not perfect

SEIRI (Sort)

■ Separate unnecessary items from the necessary items within your work area.

KEYPOINT:
Keep what is IMPORTANT,
NECESSARY and USEFUL!
Sort Items into 3 Categories:

■ Most frequently used (daily)


■ Less frequently used (1x/month or quarterly)
■ Items which will probably never be used
GUIDELINES WHEN TO DUMP

■ Is it a duplicate?
■ What is the date?
■ Do I need this or really want it?
■ How often will I refer to the information?
■ Is the info current and relevant?
■ Do I have time to read this?
■ Does someone else have this information?
GUIDELINES WHEN TO SAVE

■ It is the only copy


■ Replication would be very difficult
■ You will need to refer to the information again soon
■ You are required by law to keep it
■ It is an integral part of the client or project

■ It is a way of eliminating search.
■ Establishing a neat layout so that you can always get just as much as what you need
when you need it.
Where do we need to organize?

– Put aside at least 5 minutes before and after work for cleaning
– Divide zones and decide on exact area of responsibility of each Team Member.
– Assign a weekly or monthly 5S Day
