 The main function of the lung is to exchange gas

between atmospheric air and blood
 Breathing can be divided into four basic
mechanisms :
1. Pulmonary ventilation, which means the
entry and exit of air between the alveoli
and the atmosphere
2. Diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide
between the alveoli and blood
3. Transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in
the blood and body fluids to and from cells
