Basic Research
A scientific research that aims to scientific theories for
improved understanding for prediction of natural or other
phenomena.
Involves the process of collecting and analysing data to
develop or enhance theories.
Intended to answer why, what or how questions.
Does not have immediate commercial objectives.
Applied research
Refers to scientific study and research that seeks to solve
practical problems.
The new knowledge acquired has specific commercial
objectives.
e.g: create new products, procedures or services.
Leads to fundamental questions.
Action research
Disciplined process of inquiry conducted and for those taking the
action.
Studies carried out in the course of an activity or occupation,
typically in the field of education, to improve the methods and
approach of these involved.
Process:
1. Selecting a focus
2. Clarifying theories
3. Identifying research questions
4. Collecting data
5. Analyzing data
6. Reporting data
7. Taking informed actions
Evaluation Research
Refers to the kind of applied social research that attempts
to evaluate the effectiveness of social programs.
Used to provide the feedback on an event, organization,
program, policy, technology, person, activity, etc.
Examples:
Survey research, case study, field experiment, secondary
data analysis
