TAXONOMY

Kingdom: Bacteria
Phylum: Proteobacteria
Class: Gammaproteobacteria
Order: Enterobacteriales
Family: Enterobacteriaceae
Genre: Escherichia
Species: E. coli
MICROSCOPY

Escherichia coli obtained by means

Escherichia coli under optical
of atomic force microscopy in
microscopy. Escherichia coli under scanning "tapping" mode (intermittent
electron microscopy. contact) and in the absence of
humidity.
MACROSCOPIC CHARACTERISTICS

Metallic green color in the

colonies characteristic of Escherichia coli on Mac Conkey agar.
Escherichia coli in culture They are able to see isolated colonies,
medium. EMB they are medium, circular, convex
colonies, rounded edges, positive lactose
which gives them pink coloration.
CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING TO THE PATOTYPES
CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING TO THE SEROTYPES
ECOLOGY OF THE MICROORGANIMS
They are facultative anaerobic bacteria, coliform, mesophyll, gram-negative short bacillus, measure
approximately 2 to 3 microns. They have peritrichous flagella. (4)
-Do not form spores. (4)
- They can ferment glucose and lactose.
-They are positive indole, catalase positive and oxidase negative.
-Producers of vitamin B and K.
-Nutrition not demanding.
ECOLOGY OF THE MICROORGANIMS
-They are bacteria found in the intestine of humans and animals.
- Being innocuous.
- However, there are some strains of E. coli that produce toxins, called
verotoxins or shiga-type toxins that can cause severe gastrointestinal
symptoms in humans. (4)
-Reservorio.
- Carrier animals show no clinical sign and eliminate E.coli bacteria in the
feces.
ECOLOGY OF THE MICROORGANIMS
Temperature range:
-They grow in a temperature range of 7 ° C to 50 ° C with an optimum temperature of 37 ° C (4)
PH range:
-It grows in a range of 4.4 to 8.8 having its optimum pH between 7 to 7.5.
Aw:
-They need 0.93 to 0.99 of available water. (4)
Infectious dose:
-For E. coli O157: H7, the infective dose is low, between 10 to 700 cells (less than 100) (4)
VIRULENCE FACTOR
The combination of letters and numbers in the name of the bacterium refers to the specific antigenic
markers found on its surface and distinguishes it from other types of Escherichia coli :?

-The somatic O antigen, coming from the lipopolysaccharide of the cell wall
-The flagellar antigen H, composed of 75 polysaccharides.
-Shiga toxin, LPS, LT y ST.
-β-D-lactamasa.
-S transmissible plasmids.
-Hemolysins (exotoxins)
-Bacteriocins.
-Genetic exchange by transduction
and conjugation
Food involved

Raw or
Contamination in handling
undercooked meat

Fecal contamination

Contamination in the
Unpasteurized milk extraction
ETAS IN COLOMBIA AND THE WORLD

The CDC estimates that STEC infections cause 265,000

illnesses, 3600 hospitalizations and 30 deaths in the
United States each year.

Of the 53 cases reported so far, 31 patients had to be

hospitalized, including 5 with kidney failure, the CDC
said. No deaths have been reported.
