Innovation – Indian Railway Coach

Introduction :

In response to Hon’ble Prime Minister’s clarion call for innovation in Indian Railways under
the Navrachna Initiative, Indian Railways has decided to conduct a public competition for
‘Increasing Passenger Carrying Capacity of Coaches of Indian Railways’.
Purpose / Objective of Innovation Challenge :

THE CENTRAL IDEA IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF COACH LAYOUT OF NON-AC 3-TIER ICF
DESIGN SLEEPER COACH OF ICF DESIGN FOR INCREASING PASSENGER CARRYING CAPACITY.

Presently, Indian Railways (IR) Non-AC 3-Tier Sleeper Coach have a design of
coach layout which was developed considering combined requirements of
passengers in different category of trains. These passenger coaches are in service
in different type of trains (overnight, long distance mail/express) and are fitted with
the vestibules at each coach end and two body side entrance doors aside. Two
Emergency exit windows aside are also provided.
Detail Description of Innovation Challenge :
The Challenge is designed as an online competition for submission of original innovative
technological solution for 'Increasing Passenger Carrying Capacity of Coaches of Indian
Railways'. The challenge invites ideas to modify the existing layout design of Non-AC 3-Tier
ICF design Sleeper Coach of ICF design in such a way that passenger carrying capacity is
enhanced with out compromising existing level of ergonomic comfort and passenger
amenities.

The Challenge aims to encourage creation of innovative, easy to use designs and solutions
that can permit a higher number of Passengers with out infringing the Passenger's travel
comfort.
Boundary Conditions :
• The proposed solution should consider comfort level and ease of movement during
normal operation as well as emergency evacuation.
• Generally, coach dimensions are in conformance to Diagram-1D of Indian Railway
Schedule of Dimensions (IRSOD) followed for Indian Railways coach design.
• For ergonomics design practice, Indian Anthropometric Dimensions published by
National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad can be referred. However, adequacy of
information contained in the above publication should be examined prior to use.
Railway Board Expectations from the Design :

• Retrofit ability.
• Ease of use
• Maintainability
• Adherence to presently provided overall dimensions and space envelope, under all
circumstances
• Ruggedness to Withstand repeated rough usage with people and heavy luggage and
vibrations due to dynamic forces up to a level of 3G
• Able to cater to all genders and ethnic groups
• Aesthetically pleasing and passenger friendly
Entry Submission Fields – Mandatory :

The participants shall be required to submit their entries in the fields provided in the Entry
Submission forms limited to the number of words prescribed for the fields as under:

1. Abstract of the Proposed Innovation, in about 2000 characters.

2. System of Working of the Proposed Innovation, limited to 8000 characters. Drawings, if necessary,
can be attached as PDF, but should not exceed 8 MB in size.
3. Elaboration on utility to passengers and how the innovative concept/ design enhance the
passenger experience in about 1200 characters.
4. Feasibility of Implementation of the proposed innovation and integration with the existing
infrastructure and new setup including retro-fitments and modifications required should be
explained in about 1200 characters.
5. Explain how the existing infrastructure is integrated with the proposed Innovation in about 2000
characters.
6. Originality of the Proposed Innovation to explain how the proposed Innovation is an original idea in
about 1200 characters.
7. Cost effectiveness of proposed design for setup and operation (to include initial cost, operating
cost, life cycle costing) to be explained in about 1600 characters.
8. Maintainability of the proposed design explaining its ruggedness, ease of maintenance and swift
replacement of spares to be explained in about 1200 characters.
9. Possible constraints anticipated in deployment to be explained in about 1200 characters.
