THE MOLE AND MOLAR MASS

 Chemists use a special unit when counting the numbers of atoms or mol
ecules in a sample that has been measured at the macroscopic level
 This unit is called the mole, and it is based on quantities that we work
with easily in the laboratory
 For example, a piece of aluminum about the size of pencil eraser contain
s approximately 2 × 1022 aluminum atoms
 For example, the eraser‐sized sample of aluminum that contains about 2
× 1022 Al atoms can also be described as containing 0.03 moles of Al at

AVOGADRO’S NUMBER

 The number of particles (atoms, molecules, or other o

bjects) in one mole is equal to the number of atoms i
n exactly 12 g of carbon‐12
 This number of particles is called Avogadro’s
number (NA) and has a value of 6.0221415 × 1023
 In most cases we will use 6.022 × 1023 or 6.02 × 102
3 for Avogadro’s number
 One mole of any element contains 6.0221415 × 1023
atoms of that element, and one mole of a molecular c
ompound contains 6.0221415 × 1023 molecules of th

MOLAR MASS

 Molar
mass is the mass, in grams, of one mole of of
a substance
 It is related to the atomic weight of an eleme
nt, as shown here:

STOICHIOMETRY AND COMPOUND FORMULAS

 Stoichiometry is the
study of the relationship
between relative amount
of subtances.
