How Turbochargers work?
• It used forced induction system to increase
engine boost by:
 Compressing the air and allowing more air flow
into the engine
 Increasing the ratio of air and petrol mixture in the
engine combustion
 Generating powerful explosion in the engine
cylinder to move the crank shaft faster than
normal engine
Basic Component in Turbocharger System
Turbine & Compressor
The exhaust gas will move the turbine which connected with
compressor and it will compresses the incoming air to high
pressure air which contain more oxygen than a normal air

Intercooler
Intercooler will reduce the temperature of the the hot inlet air
that is passing through the other (inside part) of the intercooler
by using the cold air that passing through it fins

Wastegate
It serves to regulate and protect the engine and turbocharger
from excess boost. When boost pressure reaches a certain point
the flap of the wastegate opens and diverts pressure away from
the turbine wheel.
Turbochargers Design
Description
1. Turbocharger bolted to the
exhaust manifold of the
engine
2. The exhaust gas will spin the
turbine

3. Then the turbine will spin the compressor by using connected shaft
4. The compressor will compress the incoming air and flow it into the intercooler
5. The intercooler will reduce the temperature of compressed air
6. The compressed air which contain high oxygen pump into engine cylinder
7. High boost generated
Turbochargers Limitation and Solution For
Each Limitation

Limitation
Shaft bearing will explode if the turbine speed up to
150k rpm

Shaft Bearing
Solution
The shaft will be supported by fluid bearing to cool the
shaft and other turbocharger parts and allow the shaft to
spin without much friction
Turbochargers Limitation and Solution For
Each Limitation (Cont’d)

Limitation
Big turbine and compressor will take several time to
accelerate

Solutions
Turbo Lag • Use small turbocharger to support a big turbocharger to
reduce turbo lag
• Use high engineered shaft ball bearing to reduce further
friction
• Use ceramic turbine blade which is lighter compared to
steel blades.
More Setup For Turbochargers
• Engine that used carburetor instead of injection will
automatically increase the fuel ratio to match the
Carburator increase the air ratio.
• The new carburetor is required if the stock carburetor
is too small to supply enough fuel into engine
combustion

• Engine system will automatically increase the fuel

ratio to match the increase the air ratio. However it is
limited to the injection size and ECU program
• The system relies on the oxygen sensor that attach to
Injection the exhaust manifold to determine air-to-fuel ratio
• The new setup required to ensure maximum benefit
from the turbochargers to allow more fuel supply by
the engine ECU
