Introduction
• A water system includes a oil gear pump operated by pedal

power

• With the help of pedal shaft of oil gear pump is moved

• The shaft & pedal is connected to chain mechanism

• When shaft rotates then internal gear of pump also rotate which

transfer the water from inlet to outlet of pump

• Water flows through internal & external gear pump

Overview

• Irrigation critically lacking in third world countries.

• Current pumps do not meet economic and ergonomic

requirements of farmers.

• Bicycles are prevalent and relatively ergonomic mode of

transportation.

• Bicycle powered pump answers irrigation need.

Potential Markets
• India
• People: 58% of population in agricultural labor force
• Equipment: ~100M bicycles
• Demand: need for irrigation water predicted to rise dramatically
• Potential Concern: not socially acceptable for women to ride bicycles
• China
• People: 50% of population in agricultural labor force
• Equipment: ~750M bicycles
• Demand: only 40% of cultivated land is irrigated, yet produces 67% of crops
(www.worldbank.org)
• Many government sponsored irrigation projects fail due to poor efficiencies
and lack of system maintenance
• Summary- $1 billion market for $50 pump (2.5% market
penetration)
Working
1. Liquid enters the suction port
between the rotor (large exterior
gear) and idler (small interior gear)
teeth. The arrows indicate the
direction of the pump and liquid.

2. Liquid travels through the pump

between the teeth of the "gear-within-a-gear" principle. The crescent shape
divides the liquid and acts as a seal between the suction and discharge ports.

3. The pump head is now nearly flooded, just prior to forcing the liquid out of
the discharge port. Intermeshing gears of the idler and rotor form locked
pockets for the liquid which assures volume control.

4. Rotor and idler teeth mesh completely to form a seal equidistant from the
discharge and suction ports. This seal forces the liquid out of the discharge
port.
Internal Gear Pump Overview
Internal gear pumps are exceptionally versatile. While they are
often used on thin liquids such as solvents and fuel oil, they
excel at efficiently pumping thick liquids such as asphalt,
chocolate, and adhesives. The useful viscosity range of an
internal gear pump is from 1cPs to over 1,000,000cP.

In addition to their wide viscosity range, the pump has a wide temperature
range as well, handling liquids up to 750F / 400C. This is due to the
single point of end clearance (the distance between the ends of the rotor gear
teeth and the head of the pump). This clearance is adjustable to
accommodate high temperature, maximize efficiency for handling high
viscosity liquids, and to accommodate for wear.

The internal gear pump is non-pulsing, self-priming, and can

run dry for short periods. They're also bi-rotational, meaning
that the same pump can be used to load and unload
vessels. Because internal gear pumps have only two moving
parts, they are reliable, simple to operate, and easy to
maintain.
components
• GEAR PUMPS - One of the most common rotary pumps is the gear
pump. A typical cross section is shown in the left hand side of the
figure to the right. It consists of two gears (rotors), one of which is
driven by a shaft. The other acts as an idler and rotates through
meshing action with the driven gear. Unlike the peristaltic pump, the
gear pump has extremely close tolerances between its rotors and the
walls of the pump case. It is these clearances and the meshing of the
gear teeth that allow the liquid sealing process to occur. These same
clearances also determine the amount of leakage (slip) that occurs
during operation.
• Although it is a bit more difficult to envision, the gear pump exhibits
the same three pumping conditions. You will notice that more than
one tooth to tooth chamber is involved in all three parts of the cycle at
any given time. Because fluid is discharged by both driven and idler
gears, each shares the torque produced

Bicycle & frame

The great majority of today's
bicycles have a frame with upright
seating that looks much like the first
chain-driven bike. These upright
bicycles almost always feature the
diamond frame, a truss consisting of
two triangles: the front triangle and
the rear triangle. The front triangle
consists of the head tube, top tube,
down tube, and seat tube
Future Work/Lessons Learned
• Install double pump technology/dual reservior to reduce inertial

forces

• Reduce compliance in power transmission

• Implement drive reduction

• Extract quantitative data from mockup - measure efficiency

• Pumps are fun!

Advantages
• Advantages
• Only two moving parts
• Only one stuffing box
• Non-pulsating discharge
• Excellent for high-viscosity liquids
• Constant and even discharge regardless of pressure conditions
• Operates well in either direction
• Can be made to operate with one direction of flow with either
rotation
• Low NPSH required
• Single adjustable end clearance
• Easy to maintain
Flexible design offers application customization
Features of project
• It is compact in size

• It can be move

• No electrical power consumption

• It can be utilized at our work shop

• It is simple in construction

• Low cost

• Less weight and easy to handle

• It reduces the man power

• It is simple in operation..
disadvantages
• Usually requires moderate speeds

• Medium pressure limitations

• One bearing runs in the product pumped

• Overhung load on shaft bearing

construction
• Cutting Frame:
• Take the required dimensions of the frame using inch tape and
mark the required reference points. Using an electric cutter, etch
away the extra part and hence obtain the required frame.
• Marking:
• Mark points on the arms and the plates for fastening the
manufactured parts, using chalk or markers. Take proper
margins and precision while marking according to the required
dimensions.
Contd.
• Drilling:
• It is a process to make holes of the required diameter. Make
holes at chain socket and pipe holder on the bicycle.
• Welding:
• Welding is used to thermally join two homogeneous material .
The technique used is arc welding for frame and gas welding for
joining the aluminium parts of the structure.
• Assembling:
• Assemble all the components vis-à-vis frame, cycle, pump and
create the required pedal powered water pump structure.
conclusion
• The whole study over the topic that the wheel deal bicycle powered water pump is a very
advantageous especially for rural areas
• The problem of energy crises is very big in india and many rural
powered water pump by use of this project we save electricity and get a particular water
head and we supply the water in irrigation. We will operate a water pump by using bicycle
mechanism in the project and we can fill the water tank of housing power and get
construction work. when we drive a bicycle the wheel of bicycle are rotate so we can
provide a pulley over the wheel the pulley is mounted on the shaft impeller of impeller of
the pump the impeller is rotate due to rotating of wheel with rotation of pulley. So we
operate the pump and deliver the water at a particular head this project is installed any of
the place where water.
• Create a simple and efficient way of pumping water utilizing a human powered bicycle for
communities where electricity is unavailable or impractical. Isolated community with or
without electricity in need of efficient water pumping. Pumps can be adapted to fit
individual community needs.

• It can also be placed in garden, both gardening & cycling can do simultaneously.
• Operate pump near best efficiency point.
• Replace old pumps by energy efficient pumps
• Reduce system resistance by pressure drop assessment and pipe size optimization.
• Provide booster pump for few areas of higher head
