The word “psychology” comes from
Greek word psyche meaning “breath,
spirit, soul”, and the Greek word logia
meaning the study of something.
There are various definitions for psychology given by
variety of authors which are
1. According to “william james”(1890)
psychology is “Study of mind, descriptions
and explanation of state of consciousness”.
2. According to “wilhelm wundt” psychology is
“study of consciousness”.
3. According to “William McDougall”(1905)
psychology is “positive science of the
conduct of the living creature”.
Or
4. (1908)“Psychology is the science which aims
to give us better us understanding and control
of the behavior of the organism as a whole”.
5. According to American Psychological Association
“Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior.
The discipline embraces all aspects of the human
experience from the functions, from the function of
brain to the actions of nation from child development
of care for the aged. In every conceivable setting
scientific research centers to mental healthcare
services, “the understanding of behavior is the
enterprise of psychologists”.
6. According to Pillsbury, W.B.(1911) “Psychology can
be defined more satisfactorily as the science of human
behavior”.
7. According to Woodworth (1954) “Psychology is the
science of the activities of the individual in relation to
its environment.”
8. According to Munn (1955) “Psychology, today
concerns itself with the scientific investigation of behavior
including from the stand point of behavior much of what
earlier psychologists dealt with as experience”.
9. According to E.G. Boring (1962) “Psychology deals
with both the behavior of the man as it appears in his
responses and with consciousness as he finds it is his
immediate experience”.
10. According to C.E. Skinner (1956) “Psychology deals
with responses, to any and every kind of situation that life
presents. By responses or behavior is meant all forms of
processes, adjustment, activities and expressions of the
organism”.
