OBJECTIVE:
Our objective is to study the wear characteristics of the specimen.

Determination of wear constant.

Design and fabricate a cost effective and efficient wear tester (pin on
disc) used in the metallurgy research field.
BRIEF INTRODUCTION:
• Wear causes loss of material which affects the performance of the
machine.
• To increase the performance, reliability and efficiency of the machine
it is required to study the wear to minimise it.
CAUSES OF WEAR:
• Abrasion
• Corrosion
• Fatigue
• Adhesion
Essential to study wear:
• Wear causes an enormous annual expenditure by industry and
consumers. For some industries such as agriculture, as many as 40%
of the components replaced on equipment's have failed by wear.
• Estimates of direct cost of wear to industrial nations vary from 1 to 4
% of GNP and it is estimated that 10% of all energy generated by man
is dissipated in various friction processes.
• Thus the magnitude of losses caused to mankind makes it absolutely
necessary to study ways to minimize it. Thus minimizing wear, affects
the economics of production in a major way.
Uses of machine:
• Historically, this type of machine has been used for fundamental wear
studies of materials including metals, plastics, composites, ceramics
and coatings in solid lubricated or dry conditions.

• The principal advantage is that it is easy to cover wide load and speed
ranges and therefore obtain a broad sweep of material performance.
Wear mapping and parametric studies are readily performed
Problem definition:
• The review study on wear showed the strengths and findings of
various wear testing machines. The investigation of the same should
be utilised to allow new work to progress and therefore improve our
knowledge. Hence it is our project to design and fabricate a cost
effective and efficient wear testing machine (Pin on Disc type) which
measures the wear of the given material.
Methodology:
• In this test, the sample to study is mounted on a rotating stage and a
pin comes in contact with the sample surface, with a known force, to
create the wear.
• A flat or a sphere shaped indenter is loaded on to the test sample with
a precisely known force. The indenter is mounted on a stiff lever,
designed as a frictionless force transducer.
• As the disk is rotated, resulting frictional forces acting between the pin
on the disk are measured.
