What is textile design?

Textile : fabric artifact made by weaving, knitting or


felting.

Design : any arrangement of part, form, colour,


fabric & line.

Textile design : creating designed for woven,


knitted, printed & surface fabrics.
The Classification
Textile design divided into two part :
1. Structural Design : created through manipulation
of fabric texture.

2. Surface Design : encompasses coloring and


patterning fiber & fabric.
Structural Design

Structural Design : form of construction that built during

the process of manufacturing.

3 type of Structural Design :

 Woven

 Knitted

 Non Woven
Kinds of Structural Design
1. Weaving : two distinct sets of yarns are interlaced.
2. Knitting : method by which yarn is manipulated to
create a textile or fabric.
Knitting creates multiple loops of yarn, called
stitches, in a line or tube.
3. Felt : textile that produced by matting, condensing
& pressing fibers.
4. Crocheting : creating fabric by interlocking yarn
using crochet hook.
Surface Design

 Decorative design that applied in fabric/cloth.


 The method of decorative design includes printing,
dyeing, embroidery, and appliqué methods.
Kinds of Surface Design
1. Dyeing : Colorant the chemically bonds with the
fibers
2. Printing : Application a colorant to the surface of a
cloth to create a repeatable design.
3. Patchwork : Pieces of fabric assembled to create
larger panel.
4. Embroidery: application of threads to fabric
surface by needle.
5. Shibori : Wrapping areas as resist to create dyed
design.
