In what way did opium

affect china and europe?

What is Opium?
- The Opium Poppy is a red and brown plant, but color may vary
between different places.
- Opium is also very addictive, that is prepared from the juice of the
poppy flower, it can also be used as medicine.
- The seeds of the poppy are sometimes harvested legally and sold in
shops these seeds are usually used for food products such as bagels,
seed oil, etc……
- Opium is smoked or can be converted into heroin.
The first opium war
● The first opium war was from march 18 1839 to august 29 in 1842.
○ The british Navy moved in and then they easily defeated the outdated chinese Navy
forces. The British Navy then started to take control of the canton and reopened the
opium trade.
● China then moved to occupy several cities along the coast of china
they then blockaded the Grand canal.
● By 1842 the chinese found out that they were losing the war and they
were already to negotiate.
The second opium war (1856-1860)
● French joined the British in their fight against China
● How the war started British demands:
○ Legal opium trade
○ Free trade between China and all the different companies
● Chinese government refused → tensions increased
● Chinese seized a pirate ship, called Arrow. → British invasion of the
canton.
● British got mad and said china had no right → used that to attack
canton
● British Navy had once again took over Canton→ had control for 4
years in
● 1860 French army attacked Beijing defeated the Qing army
How did the opium trade affect the World?
★ It made the relationship between Europe and China worse than before.

★ The reason was:


○ The Indian province sold the opium in a cheap price to other countries,they
made the price so fascinating that the United States joined into the trade.
○ Plus the world has a huge curious to opium.
★ Because of the relationship between China and Europe, it caused bad consequences.
Even though, China won the first war, but in the second war, China’s economy was
crushed.
