Magnetic Amplifier

Control and Robotics Lab

Dept. Of Electrical Engineering
IIT Roorkee
Aim of the Experiment

To study the control of a series and parallel magnetic

amplifier and to draw the curve showing variation of
load current with control current.
Equipment's Required

1. A load resistance of 250 ohms and 3 Amps.

2. DC source to energize control winding – 50Volts, 1Amp
3. Rheostat
4. Two moving coil ammeters- 0-1 Amps.
5. A voltmeter – 0 to 300 Volts
Procedure
For series Magnetic Amplifier
1. Connect the load resistance and ammeter (0-1A) in series
across terminal 5-6.
2. Connect the voltmeter across the load resistance.
3. Set switch S9 to Mag-Amps position.
4. Connect a DC source through rheostat and an ammeter
(0-1 Amps) across the terminal 30-31 on the front panel.
5. Set the magnetic amplifier selector switch to series Mag-
Amps positions.
6. Put on the switch S4 and S3.
7. Supply 230 V AC to the mains directly.
For Parallel Magnetic Amplifier
All steps are same as in series Mag. Amplifier except step
5. Set the magnetic amplifier selector switch to parallel Mag-Amps positions.
6. Put on the switch S5 and S3.

Note:- These control characteristics are termed as non-polarized because the

load circuit is insensitive to control signal polarity.
Precautions: Check up the following

• No loose connections
• Switches S3 and S4 are in ‘ON’ position, switch S9 is in Mag-
Amps position. Selector switch is in series Mag-Amps
position and the rest of the switches are all in ‘OFF’ position.
• The load terminals 5-6 and control winding terminals 30-31
are connected as described in step No. 1 and step No. 4
respectively.
• All the rest of the terminals are open circuit.
Plot the Characteristics:

• Keep the control current ‘0’ and the load resistance at its
max.
• Switch on ‘S1’ note the load current.
• Vary the control current from 0mA to 500mA in stops of
20mA and in each step note down the load current and
corresponding control current.
• Reverse the direction of control current and repeat above.
• Draw a graph showing the variation of load current with
respect to control current for fixed load resistance.
