MEASUREMENT OF

NOISE

ATHUL P NATH

INTRODUCTION

•A decibel is the standard for the

measurement of noise.
•The zero on a decibel scale is at the
threshold of hearing, the lowest sound
pressure that can be heard.
• A 60 db is normal conversation, 80 db
is the level at which sound becomes
physically painful.
CLASSIFICATION

•On the basis of measurement, noise

pollution can be classified into
following:

1. Sounds of normal conversation

•Sound intensity: 40-60 db

2.Sounds from orchestra

• Sound intensity: 70 db
CLASSIFICATION

3. Sounds of heavy traffic

•Sound intensity : 90 db

4. Sounds of aircraft engine

•Sound intensity: 100-200 db

Meter
Sound Level Meter
(SLM)
 Sound level meter measure sound
pressure level .

 The standard SLM is more correctly

called an exponentially averaging
sound level meter as the AC signal
from the microphone is converted to
DC by root mean square (RMS)
 The SLM consists of a microphone,
electronic circuits and a readout
display.

 In the beginning sound level

meters were very expensive,
heavy and didn't do very much
 They were effectively
a microphone and a
voltmeter with a 1
second [SLOW] time
constant to slow
down the meter
fluctuations, so you
could average them
by eye
 The microphone can
be compared to the
Hi-Fi loudspeaker,
one converts sound
waves into electrical
signals and the other
converts electrical
signals back into
sound waves
OCTAVE BAND
ANALYZER
 It determine the adequacy of
various types of frequency-
dependant noise controls.

 Octave band measurement is used

when the frequency composition
of a sound field is needed to be
determined
 Most octave-band filter sets
provide filters with the
following center frequencies:
 31.5, 63, 125, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000,
4,000, 8,000, and 16,000 Hertz (Hz).
STATISTICAL
ANALYZER
 The statistical noise analyzer
(SNA) was designed to analyze
very-low-frequency (VLF)/low-
frequency (LF) highly impulsive
atmospheric electromagnetic
noise, which is largely produced
by lightning discharges .
Noise Dosimeter

 A noise Dosimeter is a specialized

sound level meter intended
specifically to measure the noise.

 The Dosimeter store the noise level

information and carries out an
averaging process
 It measure the
fluctuations in air pressure
caused by sound and
convert into a usable
reading.
 Noise dosimeter is
particularly useful when a
worker moves between
number of location.
 Find out how long the
worker stays at each
location and then
calculate the overall
