WHAT IS CARBON CREDIT ?
 A carbon credit is a generic term used for any tradable
certificate or permit representing the right to emit one
tone of carbon-dioxide or mass of another green house gas
with a carbon-dioxide equivalent to one tone of carbon-
dioxide.

 Carbon credits and carbon markets are a component of


national and international attempts to mitigate growth in
concentrations of greenhouse gases

IDEAS
 Prevention or reduction of carbon emission produced by
human activities from reaching the atmosphere by
capturing and diverting them to secure storage.

 Removal of carbon from atmosphere by various means and


securely storing it
MECHANISM FOR CARBON CREDIT
TRADING:
 The mechanism assists the parties meet their emission
targets.
 These mechanisms are:
 Clean Development Mechanism(CDM)
 Joint implementation(JI)
 Emission Trading (ET)
ADVANTAGES OF CARBON CREDIT

 Reduction in greenhouse gas emission.


 Source of revenue for developing nations.
 Environmental benefits.
 Technology transfer from developed to developing
countries.
 Supports a free market system.
DISADVANTAGES OF CARBON CREDIT

 Give false sense of pollution.


 No effective carbon reduction in the atmosphere.
 Developed countries purchases carbon credits rather than
finding new ways to reduce emission.
 Lack of centralized or global frame work.
