Introduction to Theory of Structures

Theory of Structures
- deals with the principles and methods
by which direct stress, shear and moment at
any section of a constituent member in a
structures may be calculated.
Structural analysis
Structural analysis is the prediction of the
performance of a given structure under
prescribed loads and/or other external effects,
such as support movements and temperature
changes. The performance characteristics
commonly of interest in the design of structures
are (1) stresses or stress resultants, such as axial
forces, shear forces, and bending moments; (2)
deflections; and (3) support reactions. Thus, the
analysis of a structure usually involves
determination of these quantities as caused by a
given loading condition. The objective of this
subject (Theory of Structure) is to present the
methods for the analysis of structures in static
equilibrium.

Load on Structures (NSCP 2010)
The determination of the loads acting on a
structures is a complex problem. The nature of
the loads varies essentially with the
architectural design the materials and the
location of the structures.
Loads are usually classified in two broad
groups, Dead loads and live loads.
• Dead loads – include its own weight. The weight
of any permanent non-structural partitions,
floor surfacing materials and other finishes.
• Live Loads – all the movable objects in a
building such as people, desks, filling cabinets
produce an imposed load on the structure.
• Wind load – the force on a structure arising
from the impact of wind on it.
• Earthquake Load – affect of design of structures
in area or great seismic activity
• Thermal load – all building materials expand of
contrary with temperature.
• Hydrostatic and Soil Pressures
