What is Rainwater Harvesting?

Rainwater harvesting is a
technology used to collect,
convey and store rain water for
later use from relatively clean
surfaces such as a roof, land
surface or rock catchment.
PROBLEM

Almost all the places are facing couple of problems

Floods - During monsoon Drought - During dry months

Why rainwater harvesting is to BE done?

To get clean drinking water

Free source

Saves high quality drinking water

Reduces the portable water

consumption
Where Rainwater Harvesting is to be used?

In dry zone areas

Coastal belt where ground water is

saline, ( tsunami effected areas)

Hilly areas where ground water

table is low

Where it is not possible to extract

ground water or have no other water
sources
Mechanism
Benefits of rain water harvesting

Water Saving,

Flooding control,

Drought mitigation

Water quality control

Ground water recharging

Improve quality of ground water

 Energy saving

 Water supply
(Domestic, Industrial & Agriculture)
Disadvantages

High initial investments tanks

Regular maintenance

Vulnerable water quality

Water supply is climate dependent

Less storage capacity

Activities
Promotion through awareness programs demonstration, media, video,
symposium training

Research & Development

Networking and Sharing Information

Conclusion

The effectiveness of rainwater

harvesting system lies in its ability to
meet the site requirements and end
use preferences. Though simple,
these systems are site specific and
need to be detailed out before
implementation. With decrease in
availability of water, rain water
harvesting presents the best option
for times to come
