In 1952 , Eugene A. and his coauthor
Nathaniel K. were studying sleep and
why/what causes REM sleep.

REM sleep is when humans and other SLIGHT

mammals do most of our dreaming. BACKGROUND
INFORMATION
They started out studying infants and
why they were experiencing eye
movement

Later they decided to take 20 adults

and use they as subjects.
HOW DID THEY STUDY

• The techniques of all-night sleep

recording, including measurements of
eye motion and EEGs of brain activity.
• These measurements then were used
to chart the sequence of sleep
patterns, including dreaming, over the
course of a night.
• Later Nathaniel K. stated that the
basic rest-activity cycle occurred
during both sleep and wakefulness.
STAGES OF REM SLEEP

• Usually sleepers pass through four

stages: 1, 2, 3, and REM (rapid eye
movement) sleep.
• You do most of your dreaming
during REM sleep stage
• Message gets sent to your brain
which actually causes your muscles
to become paralyzed.
SLEEP CYCLE

• Each stage cumulates to REM sleep, and then restarts.

• The first stage through REM takes about 90 minutes to
complete, and adults typically need to complete at least
four or five sleep cycles per night, or 6 to 9 total
hours of sleep.
• Without REM sleep you can then be diagnosed with
REM sleep deprivation.
