MY FIRST ICON

ON GLASS
"What is Scripture for those who know to read is also the painting for the
unlearned, for in it even the unknowing see what is to follow"
(Saint Gregory the Great)

Art education is certainly very important for our children in our society.
We must learn to preserve the spiritual values of our people, to know our
traditions, to rediscover them, to preserve them, but that time to make them
known to the whole world.
Approaching church painting and making a icon on glass is a challenge for us to
bring religious, aesthetic and technical elements together to become accessible by
faith, practice, and spiritual thought.

Let's try to make an icon...

In this activity we need the following materials:
* - Frames and bottles, matching one another
* - Brushes of different sizes: 001, 005, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and even
12 (recommended with soft wool, like those in Milan)
* - izvoade (models) - tempera (recommended by Koh-I-Noor)
* - car spray laccquer or low color brown lacquer
* - alcohol
* - Rotring black ink

*- emulsion by recipe: pure egg yolk (no skin) in a proportion

equal to white wine as sweet as possible (without added sugar)

MODE OF
EXECUTION

1. Slightly sanded glass on the edges, to avoid small accidents, clean

thoroughly with impurities with medicinal spirits to get the best ink.
2. Then place the lead on the table (inserted in a foil sprayed with a
little water) over which the glass that will adhere to the plastic foil
and will not slip during the work.
3. We begin to draw with the thinnest brush the contour lines, after
izvod (model), by soaking it in ink (put 4-5 drops in a metal cap).
If we can not make beautiful, thin lines, we can use a pen.
4. After drying the ink, we apply the lacquer spray if we want a lighter colored icon, or
with a brown lacquer if we want to give the icon an old tint.
5. After the lacquer has dried, we apply the colors, respecting the chrome of the
model icon. Help: As the icon is working upside down, we will first paint our lips
(brown, never red!), Then the faces (white with very little brown), the umbrellas, the
garments. For halo it's nice to use golden tempera, not yellow)
Note: Tempera will soften with emulsion instead of water and mix as best as possible.
The emulsion should be drawn into a small syringe so that we can apply small drops to
the tempera. Do not waste the temper!
MY CLASS AT WORK
The icons are framed and exposed either in school, in the porch of the
church or at home, and when charitable activities can be donated by children as
such or "given" in exchange for funds for those with material needs.
***

By painting icons, children will easily understand some aspects of the history of
Christianity. It is not for nothing that the icon is said to be a "Scripture in color".
Educate in the spirit of faith, of love for beauty, the children will become
sensible people in this world in which we try to be good with our fellow men.
