Entrepreneurial Lessons from
Life of Pi
-Prof. Malini Shah
 “Life of Pi”, the booker prize winning book by Yann Martel.

 Story of the Pi’s magical journey on a lifeboat with a Royal Bengal

Tiger teaches about faith in oneself and in God.
 At first, its just about survival and learning to work as a team. Then
you find another boat in sea embarking on their own journey.
Above all don’t loose the Hope.
 Similarities :
a lifeboat and a raft (the start-up)
a tiger (the unwanted venture capitalists angel investors)
 the sea (the market)
ships (commercial success)
Time (uncontrollable factors)
 LESSONS:

 Be Grateful : Despite those feelings we all have at some point in our

lives that nothing is good and that nothing will ever be good again
there is always something to be grateful for.
 Don’t Give up : Life of pie is a story of perseverance and of not giving
up. The darkest days are not going to last. It’s important, not to give up
on your dreams and give up on life.
 Keep Moving : Don’t get satisfied with temporary success. It’s important
to keep an eye on the final destination or the long term goal.
 Learn to Co-Exist : Pi decided to stay on the boat and set out marking
their territories and setting some rules. He started developing a bond
with the tiger. Entrepreneur needs to co-exist with both co-founders
and with competition in the market.
 Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket : While starting up, resources
are few and it’s important to save them. It’s good to have one
secure base and address the market.
 Planning is essential : it is not optional. Handbook can be thought of
as a business plan. It’s important to keep it handy and work
according to the plan and of course, keep referring to it, when in
doubt and keep monitoring the progress.
 Branding is the first step towards success : Piscina Molitor Patel [Pi
Patel] worked hard on a rebranding exercise. Decided to
remember the value of Pi expressed in several hundred decimal
places to tell that his name is derived from the Greek letter.
 For choosing Brand names: work on telling a good story which captures
the imagination of the audience. The story makes the brand name stick.
 Stay focused : Every day is binary i.e. good or bad; never neutral.
Staying focused will get you closer to the goals.
Peer to Peer Learning-900 to 90
lacs lesson from an
Alumni(Jul’12) Entrepreneurial
journey
 There is no substitute for Hard work, patience and smart work.
 Ideas fluctuated from pot making, share trading till designer salwar
kameez.
 Initially working under someone helps a lot in learning to work in team,
taking orders and coordinating with the head in charge of business.
 Critical appreciation of idea: Sleep over the idea, revisiting it, discussing
the idea with friends and family, do a thorough research, analysis of
research, the scope, growth of business and take home message.
 Pricing became the penetration of business and later resulted into the
unique selling proposition of it.
 Sleeping over the idea; don’t be emotional about it instead be
passionate about it.
 Started with 1800 rupees 20 years ago, designer Salwar kameez can
cost 300-500, determine the break even point and profit margin, be
realistic about it don’t be too conservative and don’t be too
overboard.

encourage the team by providing incentives.
 Start building teams: Production team, sales team, marketing team,
finance team and service team.
 Keep the team lean and mean.
 Implementation of idea: what is the plan?, financial layout, mapping of
the plan, start with production after sampling.
 Initially the cash flow is very important.
 Plan the cash flow properly for first 6-12 months before hand. Also not
invest too much at a time unnecessarily. Don’t lookup only in one
market. Invest more and more time not more money.
 Hurdles: creditability comes if you perform in adversity. For over coming
hurdles commitment is must. Accept critical feedback positively it
helps in growth.
 Don’t compromise on the quality because of the quantity.
 Set a realistic target.
 Arrange meetings for the discussions of the short term goals at regular
intervals.
 Goals have to be smart and clear.
 Celebrate smallest of achievements. Celebrate with the team.
 Expansion of plan: Identify different markets. Put together a solid
financial plan. Patience is the name of the game. Regular follow ups to
crack any deals.
 Reinvest the profits into business.
 Be passionate about business. Have a solid core team. Trust your team
and idea. Change is a way of life. Make a business model in such a way
that you could adapt to that change. Do the SWOT analysis.

1. Definition of Entrepreneur- Define
Entrepreneurship
 A starter: An initiator who comes up with something new; it can be a
business or any other income generating venture or activity. He is
regarded as the beginner and sometimes the end of a project.
 A driver: A leader who inspires other team members to keep working
towards attaining the set goals. He sets the pace and leads the team
to the direction the project is taking.
 A responsible and accountable person: As someone with the highest
stake in the project, the entrepreneur is ultimately responsible for
everything that happens to the business venture.
 Leadership traits must be exhibited in Entrepreneurship.
 To design and manage a business successfully by the use of available
resources is called entrepreneurship.
 Successful entrepreneurship requires a business plan, workforce, initial
capital, quality leadership and risk aversion as essential production
factors.
 To become an entrepreneur there should be a viable business
idea, a good plan to execute, a focused mind and a positive
attitude.
 Entrepreneurship provides a platform for innovation and financial
freedom.
 Entrepreneurial Traits:
 Independence of the mind; think freely and innovatively.
 Optimism that is being always positive and believe in the
chosen course.
 Self-assured without doubting self.
 Passionate about what they are doing.
 With vision, one set achievable targets and utilizes all available
resources towards attaining them. Always focused on the price
no matter the setbacks.
 Entrepreneurs are doers. i.e. Action-oriented.
 Do not procrastinate.
2. Four reasons why Goal setting
matters
 Having a goal plan in place will help in building a sense of comfort
and security about financial future.
 It Enforces Savings Discipline :
 The normal approach to saving is to “save what’s left after
spending”. But the better approach is “Spending what’s left after
saving.” Put the monthly savings on auto-pilot mode, minus the
interest and plus the profits that accrue from compounding.
 It Encourages Long-Term Thinking :
 It tends to adopt long term thinking with respect to the
investments. The business venture is then less impacted by
inevitable changes in the markets. Linking savings to time-bound
goals implicitly links the assets to the time horizon of investor.
 It Reduces Financial Stress :
 the lack of awareness regarding the level of preparedness for the
life’s critical milestones could make anyone feel stressed. Having a
goal plan in place will take away much of the unease, and help to
build a sense of comfort and security about the financial future.
 It Inflation-Proofs Your Savings :
 consider inflationary trends while mapping out important financial
objectives, goal planning helps inflation proof of savings. A
concrete, well defined annual step up plan, and the selection of
more aggressive asset classes such as equity mutual fund SIP’s, are
the two more common outcomes of goal planning.
 An unstructured savings tend to flow into traditional asset classes such
as fixed deposits and life insurance, which do precious little to cushion
our savings against inflation.
3. Meaning of Professionalism and how
to improve it
 Professionalism can be defined broadly to mean the good
judgment, skill and polite manners that are expected of a person
who is a trained professional in a certain field to perform a job well.
 Characteristics :
 Appearance: always be neat in the way the professionals
appear.
 Demeanour : be confident in a well-spoken and polite manner.
 Reliable and having phone etiquette.
 Maintaining the poise in difficult situations without loosing cool.
 Possessing phone etiquette, accountability, organisational skills.
 Written correspondence: always be formal and very polite.
Always stick to the point and be as brief as possible.
 Ways to improve professionalism :
 Character is the most important aspect. Keep a check on self
behaviour when alone.
 Good professionals always take responsibilities and crave for success
both at an individual and an organisational levels.
 One should be conscious of self-image. Dress appropriately.
 Building good relationships with customers is a recipe for customer
service.
 Professionals should always strive to exceed customer expectations.
 Never sound offensive or demeaning while communicating either
with clients or employees.
 Remain calm to avoid escalating the matter to greater proportions.
 Commitment is a pre-requisite for all professionals.
 All professionals should be level-headed when dealing with stressful
situations.
4. Mindful Leadership – To transform
yourself and Inspire others
 “The practice of mindfulness begins in the small, remote cave of your
unconscious mind and blossoms with the sunlight of your conscious
life, reaching far beyond the people and places you can see.”
-Earon Davis
 These days there is a lot of distraction, due to which many of us are
suffering from ADT(Attention deficit traits), all credit to the nonstop
emails, SMS's, WhatsApp messages; add to that the targets, the
endless to-do lists and the busyness of life that plagues us.
 “Mindful Leadership” is the ability to lead from the bottom up, to gain
the respect and recognition from others, and to do so in a manner
that involves compassion, a willingness and readiness to put others
and the mission before themselves.
 It is all about mindset more than anything else.
 Cultivate self-awareness and compassion and lead with authenticity in
a way that inspires others. By this method leaders can transform their
own lives, organizations, communities and gradually the world.
 Marut Bhardwaj along with her partner Bhaskar Rao chose to switch to
Mindful leadership. They brought the Mindful Leadership Summit to
India in 2016.
 The mission of this Summit is to drive the advancement of mindfulness
and compassion in the workplace.
 During this it was taught how to apply mindful leadership in workshops,
and connect with fellow leaders in discussion and dialogue.
 There were thought leaders, coaches, trainers, health care specialists
who shared their insights on mindfulness and how and why to employ
it as a way of leadership.
 There is a sense of importance given to self discovery, the power of
community & alliances to bring about change and a future where
work is a source of joy for everyone.
5. Five ways to identify whether you’re a
manager or a Leader
 Manager: a person responsible for controlling or administrating an organization
or group of staff. Manager has people who work for him.
 Leader: person who leads or commands a group, organization or country.
Leader has people who will follow him.
 5 principles to examine whether you’re a manager or a leader:
 Focus :
 In management, the job is to focus on the now, and the short term. the
manager needs to focus on a lot more than just three or four priorities.
Manager is good at delivering in short-term focus areas.
 Leaders focus on a smaller amount of things that are more future-oriented.
This allows them to put a lot of their thinking power into smaller buckets.
Leaders have three or five proprieties on which they are focused.
 Creativity :
 a manager is generally maintaining what is already in place and making sure
things are running smoothly.
 Leaders try to make new partnerships, create solutions to problems that don’t
even exist yet. Leadership roles are more innovative.
 Skill set :
 Managers are extremely effective in dealing with details.
 Leader has the ability to take a step back and look at the bigger picture,
and ask the right questions; questions asked in a way that will uncover the
best answers in the room.
 Personal Qualities :
 Manager gets excited in waking up and going to the office, figuring out the
self-doings, making sure all the processes are running the way they need to
be.
 Leaders are not the happiest people because they are always living in the
future.
 Knowledge :
 When a manager knows everything about something, there is one area they
specialize in and they are the best at that.
 Leaders know something about everything. They need to be the most curious
person in the room every single time. To know enough, but not too much,
and allow everyone else in the room to contribute their thoughts.
6. The Secret to great Leadership? Learn
to lead yourself First
 If you want to climb the ladder as a leader, you can't miss the first rung-
-learning how to lead yourself.
 Luther and Johnson of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business
have been advancing the concept of Self-Observant Leadership,
which centres around a universal truth:
 You can't effectively lead others until you know how to lead
yourself.
 When one deeply understand self identity, compare it to your
reputation and then make meaning of the observations and choose to
adapt.
 Honesty with self is must. Authenticity is understanding who you are and
how you’re perceived, then making behavioural changes to become
the leader you want to be.
 Its authenticity via self-awareness and adjustment and it requires
focused attention to internal and external channels of feedback.
 Luther and Johnson shared 6 steps to practice Self- Observant
Leadership:
 Live your Values
 Move towards purpose
 Learn
 Be Present in the moment.
 Reflect on the gap between your desired identity and how you're
perceived.
 Adjust
 There are few people who act as the system needs them without
consideration to their authentic selves, all in the effort to rise up the
ladder. But it always catches up with them in the end. At some point
raw performance intersects with potential.
 There are people with the greatest potential for advancement see the
potential in being honest with themselves.
7. Choose your Leadership Style

 Leadership Archetypes:
 Leaders are either directive or participatory –
 Directive Leaders : give orders, set meetings, give directions, correcting of
work and generally sit above the team not with it. E.g.: Steve Jobs of Apple
and Marissa Mayer of Yahoo.
 Participatory Leaders : work alongside of the team members. Empower the
team and allow members to freely express themselves. E.g.: Mark Parker of
Nike.
 Questions for team Leaders:
 When a deadline is long, then the leader should be more directive to
make sure the work is done on time.
 When the deadline is short, the leader can be more participatory as
team members are more inclined to get things done.
 The nature of work:
 The nature of work is evolving to become more coupled or intertwined
with different roles. With knowledge work, it’s hard to clearly define a
person’s individual effort in the end product.
 The degree of coupling only affects the leader’s intensity of directing
or contributing efforts, but it doesn't affect the type of leadership that
would emerge in equilibrium.
 Coordination costs of a team:
 The larger the team, the less effective it will be due to coordination
costs. good communication and planning within a larger group does
require more management. With large teams there is more creativity
and a directive leader would help the team’s effort.
 Decision:
 Effective leadership depends on the situation. Participatory Leadership
is considered to be the best but at times directive leadership style is
what is the best for the team.
8. The three types of Leaders who
create Radical Change
 Julie Battilana, a long-time scholar of institutional change, has
identified common themes among those social movements that
don't merely broadcast the need for a social change, but actually
create long-term impact.
 According to Battilana, every successful social movement features
three distinct leadership roles: the Agitator, the Innovator, and the
Orchestrator.
 In history there were some individual actors as highly influential, single
leaders rarely change the course of society on their own.
 Effective agitators are able to draw attention to a problem and
convince others that it requires both some corrective action and
collective work to bring it about; agitators need to communicate in
a manner that ensures grievances are shared and collective and not
seen as irrelevant.
 Innovator is likely someone who has studies, lived or experienced
something beyond the norms in a given environment and thus is able
to create a vision of a different future that nonetheless makes sense to
and captivates, those living within the existing practices and
conditions.
 Innovators need to communicate the validity of their proposed
solution.
 Orchestrators often need to tailor their message to the interests of the
various constituencies they are trying to persuade to embrace the
change. They need to strike a balance, as they also need to ensure
that the overall message around change adoption remains coherent.
 Orchestrators must be able to tailor information to different types of
constituent sometimes different groups all over the world while still
maintaining a cohesive message.
 “Societal change takes time, it takes a lot of work, and most of the
time you’re not going to get a lot of recognition.” Battilana also warns
that effecting change does not guarantee glory. Behind any
successful movement lies a great deal of thankless determination and
sweat.
9. 5 simple qualities you can develop to
be a Better Leader
 The expected qualities of a leader are: Authenticity, Accountability,
Nurturing, Great communicator, Humility, Motivating, Inspiring, etc.
 There are 5 more qualities that help to improve results and
attractiveness as a Leader.
 Optimism :
 The ability to see challenges as opportunities, to create a positive
atmosphere, having confidence in the ability of self ad the team
are great morale boosters.
 Be optimistic about the outcome and make this a self-fulfilling
prophecy.
 Pragmatism :

in 2018
 Both small and large companies most want to focus on are:
 Management and Leadership skills:
 Top management must continue to learn to inspire, motivate and
empower their leadership teams.
 A leader doesn't have to be dynamic and charming--just highly
communicative and transparent.
 The messages leadership sends virtually and in person are
essential to creating a positive and productive atmosphere.
 Understanding diversity, especially generations, culture, and
gender will be a top priority in 2018.
 Technical Skills:
 Studies have shown that 47 percent of managers don't receive
any training when they take a new leadership role. This lack of
training can be detrimental to technical teams.
 A firm may need to invest in more extensive and specialized
training to remain competitive in sourcing talent.
 Assessing an employee's abilities in critical thinking, analytical
skills and the state of their technical experience is crucial to
know what talent you can leverage and what training needs to
be done.

explore the Options; establish the Will.
