BLOOD SUPPLY OF BRAIN

NAME : Pradyumna.k
R NO: 44
2018 batch
INDEX
• Arterial supply of brain
• Veins of brain
• Blood supply of the brain stem
Over view of arterial supply of brain
BASILAR ARTARY
• It is formed by the union of vertebral arteries
at the lower border of pons.
• It ends by the upper border of pons , dividing
in to two posterior cerebral arteries
• Its branches are
1)Anterior inferior cerebellar artery:supplies
anteroinferior aspect of cerebellum
2)LABYRINTHINE ARTERY : Supplies internal ear
andit is an end artery
3)Pontine branches;it has 2 branches 1.medial
2.lateral
4)Superior cerebellar artery:it sends many branches
to the superior surface of cerebellum
5)Posterior cerebral arteries:it has 3 branches
a)Posteriomedial central branches
b)Posterior choroidal artery
c)Cortical branches
• INTERNAL CAROTID ARTARY:Each internal
carotid artery enters the cranial cavity and
carotid canal
• 1)ophthalmic artery:
• 2)posterior communicating artery:it gives
branches to the crus cerebrai,optic
tract,hypophysis and hypothalamus
• 3)anterior choroidal artery:supply choroid
plexus of inferior horn of lateral ventricle
• 4)anterior cerebral artery: it supplies part of
internal capsule and basal nuclei
• Middle cerebral artery:it gives off
• 1)deep branches which supplies anterior limb
of internal capsiule and part of basal nuclei
• 2)temporal
• 3)frontal
• 4)parietal branches
CIRCULUS ANTERIOSUS (OR)CIRCLE OF WILLIS
It is hexagonal arterial circle situated at the base of
brain in the inter peduncular fossa it is formed by
the anterior cerebral branches of internal carotid
terminal parts of internal carotid arteries and
posterior cerebral branches of basilar artery
A)FORMATION:
ANTERIORLY:Anterior communicating artery joining
the two anterior cerebral artaries
B)ANTERIOLATERALY:Anterior cerebral arteries
• LATERALLY:Internal carotid arteries
• POSTERIOLATERALLY:Posterior communicating
arteries
• POSTERIORLY:posterior cerebral arteries

• B)BRANCHES:1)cortical
• 2)central
• 3)choroidal
• ARTERIAL SUPPLY OF CEREBRAL CORTX
• Middle cerebral artery is main artery on
superolateral surface
• Anterior cerebral artery is the chief artery on
medial surface
• Posterior cerebral is the principle artery on
inferior surface
• ARTERIAL SUPPLY OF CEREBELLUM
• Superior cerebellar artery
• Anterior inferior cerebellar artery
• Posterior inferior cerebellar artery
Veins of cerebrum
• GROUPS OF VEINS
• External cerebral veins:
• 1)superior cerebral Veins :These are 6 to 12 in
number.they drain the superolateral surface of
the hemisphere
• 2)Superficial middle cerebral vein:this drains
the area around the posterior ramus of the
lateral sulcus
• 3)Deep middle cerebral vein:this drains the
surfaces of the insula and terminates in the
basal vein
• 4)Inferior cerebral vein:they are divided in to
two parts they are;
• Orbital veins:they terminates in the superior
cerebral veins
• Tentorial vein:they terminates in the cavernous
or any other surrounding sinus
• 5)Anterior cerebral veins:these are the small
veins which drain in to the corpus callosum
INTERNAL CEREBRAL VEIN:It is formed by the union
of the the thalamostriate and choroidal veinat
the apex of the tela choroidea of the third
ventricles
TERMINAL VEINS:Great
cerebral vein: it is formed by union of the 2 internal
cerebral veins
Basal vein:it is formed at the anterior perforated
substance by the union of the deep middle
cerebral veins,and the striate vein
BLOOD SUPPLY OF THE BRAIN STEM
• The mid brain is supplied by branhes from the
posteriorcerebral artery including their central
branches,both posteromedial and
posterolateral
• The pons is supplied by the pontine branch of
basilar artery
• Medulla is supplied by :
• medullary branch of vertibral artery
• Branches from the posterior inferior cerebellar
artery
