I shall sing you to sleep, thou hapless maiden Let down your long and jetblack hair
What is your wish? Shield your forehead
Would you listen to a kundiman or to music And from them hide the marks of sorrow:
Sweet and mellifluous This the veil
From the lyre of the Malaysian Muse? Of your purity, thou unhappy virgin
Listen: It will avert
Sleep! Sleep! Beautiful Malaya, Their gaze and serve as the curtain
So you may not see what they inflict on you. Of your nakedness that the traitor laugh at.

Lie down in your golden hammock While for the opal rays of dawn we wait
On a pallet To shine forth,
Of softest down from white swans; Try to get some rest:
And in the shade Close your eyes,
Under the mango tree there we shall sing For midnight is still here, we hear the sounds of darkness;
Your lament, Try to
Your grief, your weeping with zither music, Sleep! Sleep! Beautiful Malaya,
Let the traitors hear and quake with fear! So you may not see what they inflict on you.
