ICAO-179
Introduction
Aeronautical ?
is the science or art involved with the
study, design, and manufacturing of
air flight capable machines, and the techniques
of operating aircraft and rockets within the
atmosphere.
Tele ?
Distance…..
Communication ?
Exchange of thoughts, ideas, feelings,
data,…….. between two or more parties.
Aeronautical Telecommunication Service
A telecommunication service provided for any
aeronautical purpose.
Why Aeronautical Telecommunications is vital to aviation field ?
• It is the life blood of the aeronautical industry.
• It is the most critical ground service in aviation
because, it is practically necessary in every field of
aviation activity.
• It helps to full fill the ICAO objectives
o Safety
o Efficiency
o Regularity
o Economy
It is essential for the development in Aviation
The development in aviation today would
never have achieved this level of
sophistication, without the development of in
Aeronautical Telecommunication.
Evolving of Aviation industry and necessity for Aeronautical
Telecommunication.
Soon after the invention of the aircraft, early
aviators flew in short distances, at low altitudes,
mostly on visual guidance, during day time, in good
weather conditions. Hence, they didn’t have any
necessity of Aeronautical Telecommunications.
Wright Brothers achieve sustained controlled
powered flight at Kitty Hawk on December 7, 1903
The risk
The earlier aviator flew to and from not knowing
the grave risks he had to face.
eg : Weather hazards.
Flying at nights in low visibility.
Condition of the airfield of arrival.
etc…
The essentials to the aviator for his safety
The information regarding a departure of an aircraft
from an airfield of departure, is an essential thing at
the airfield of arrival.
Condition of the airfield of arrival.
Weather conditions prevailing enroute and airfield
of arrival.
Danger areas to be avoided.
Other movements on the track (other air traffic)
etc…
For the necessity of the safety of the aviator,
Aeronautical Telecommunication became a major factor
in air navigation.
As a result, Morse Code was used to transmit and
receive information to and from airfields of departure
and arrival. [Development of Aeronautical Fixed
Circuits and Aeronautical Fixed Service (AFS)]
Aeronautical Fixed Service (AFS)
is a Telecommunication Service
between specified fixed points
provided primarily
for the safety of air navigation
and for the regular, efficient and economical
Operation of air services
Aeronautical Fixed circuit
A circuit forming part of the aeronautical
fixed service (AFS)
Later aviator had to travel long distances, for
long durations, to unknown destinations, at nights,
in bad weather conditions, at high speeds, at
high altitudes, with heavy loads, with all the other
aircraft in flight (greater amount of air traffic).
Aviation as a form of transport
Aviation started developing as a form of
transportation.
Larger aircraft were built, equipped with
telecommunication facilities capable of
communication with the airports. In these large
aircrafts there was a special cabin for the radio
officer built with the radio equipments. This
increased the number of persons in the cockpit.
(Development of Aeronautical Mobile Service)
Aeronautical Mobile Service
is a mobile service
between aeronautical stations and
aircraft stations, or
between aircraft stations
In which survival craft stations may
participate;
Emergency position-indicating radiobeacon
stations may also participate in this service on
designated distress and emergency
frequencies.

Jet age
As better aircraft such as jets, supersonic
aircrafts were built, the Morse code technique
was done away with direct voice
communication between aircraft and ground
was introduced.
Involvement of Satellite technology
As the skies became more crowded,
communication between airports started using
satellite technology and radio-teletype circuits
which allowed the aviators to travel for
thousands of miles at a stretch. (Development
of Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication
Network - AFTN)
Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN)
A world wide system
of aeronautical fixed circuits
provided as a part of the aeronautical fixed
service
for the exchange of messages and/or digital
data
between aeronautical fixed stations
having the same or compatible
communications characteristics.
Involvement of Computers to the Aeronautical
Telecommunication Service.
Advancement in the aviation and expansion in it
required the communication to go into computers.
This helped to link the load of traffic flowing form
various aviation centers around the globe. At
present it has helped to develop in doing most of
the communications between the aircraft and the
ground stations too.
