A. Childhood

 - refers to the time of being a child


- the early stage in the existence or
development of a person
- evolving series of steps, usually constant
towards adulthood shaped by forces and ideas
from ethnicity to class, from region to religion
and from gender to politics
- time of innocence(free from innocence but
vulnerable to forces in the environment)
- period where one enjoys closeness with
parents and shared expectations
Childhood Patterns
 Typical “free” child – homogenous society where he had to contend
with similar values, common religious precepts and expectations,
and opportunities from a characteristically rural setting.

“ Extension of childhood”- stretched to adolescence


Stanley G. Hall (20th century)-schooling of children for longer
periods of time( minimum lengths of school years + high school)
- Age of consent: 21 to 22
- Attempts of strengthening child labor laws
- Health and welfare – like vaccination and nutrition
- Raised with particular traditions:
- religious faith - proper use of resources
- family importance - appreciation for larger culture

- Calvert 1992-” The basic markers for becoming an adult completing one’s
schooling
finding occupation, marriage remains the same
b. Adolescence
 Latin word: adolenscia (adolescere) “to grow up”
 - period of psychological and social transition
between childhood and adulthood
- transitional stage of human development in
which a juvenile matures into an adult
- teenager
- involves biological, social and psychological
changes
Accdg. to World Health Organization (WHO)- the
period of life between
10 and 19 years of age
(US 12-14 up to 19-20), 13-19 y.o
The Rights of Children and Young Persons

- Aimed at understanding children better and for the
Filipino teacher to be more aware of the children’s
rights.

Title and Scope of Code. - The Code shall be known


as the "Child and Youth Welfare Code". It shall apply
to persons below twenty-one years of age except
those emancipated in accordance with
law. "Child" or "minor" or "youth" as used in this
Code, shall refer to such persons.
 United Nations Conventions on the
Rights of the Child 1989(UNCRC)-
provides comprehensive listing of rights
for children-social, economic, cultural, civil
and political
 Convention of the Rights of the
Child (CRC)- obligated to give primary
consideration to the best interest of the
child in all aspects of its decision-making.
