Motivation

• The processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction


and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal.

• Motivation is the reason for people's actions, willingness and


goals.

• Motivation is the driving force which stimulates an individual to


initiate and sustain a behavior.
Motivation

• Motivation is a desire that fuels an individual to perform or


continue an action based on needs and wants of the individual.
Types of Motivation:
Motivation Components:
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

• Needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied before


individuals can attend to needs higher up.
McClelland’s Theory of Needs

• A theory that states achievement, power, and affiliation are three


important needs that help explain motivation

• Achievement – drive to excel


• Power – make others behave in a way which they would not have
otherwise
• Affiliation – desire for interpersonal relationships
Cognitive Evaluation Theory

• It states that allocating extrinsic rewards for behavior that had


been previously intrinsically rewarding tends to decrease the
overall level of motivation if the rewards are seen as controlling.
Redesigning jobs for motivation

• Job rotation – the periodic shifting of an employee from one task


to another
• Job enrichment – the vertical expansion of jobs, which increases
the degree to which the worker controls the planning, execution
and evaluation of the work
• Flex time – flexible work hours
• Job sharing – allowing two or more individuals to split a traditional
40 hour a week job
• Telecommuting – working from home at least two days a week
