Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses
of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an
integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities
to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic
human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.
The school workload in the Philippines is one of the heaviest educational system around
the world. Hence, recently, increasing cases of academically related anxieties, depression, and
burn out are on trend. As a way of coping for this situation, the Department of Education has
mandated an orientation about Mental Health Awareness among pupils.
As educators, by having open conversations and raising awareness around mental health,
you can teach your pupils how to recognize the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Getting
them to understand the importance of self-care and mental wellbeing can help to reduce the
stigma associated with having mental health difficulties.
