BRIGADA ESKWELA 2021

GULAYAN SA TAHANAN 2021 NARRATIVE REPORT

The fierce emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic strongly hit every aspect of our society. Lines were drawn, movements were crippled, and progress was
halted. Despite the encountered restrictions, the Department of Education has continued make sustainability a priority.
In this regard, DepEd remains adamant in the utilization of the Gulayan sa Paaralan program, which was envisioned to help address the concerns on hunger
and malnutrition in the country. DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones* stated that “[Gulayan sa Paaralan is] part of the department's poverty alleviation programs."
Thus, it is deemed important to foster awareness on the functions and benefits of the Gulayan sa Paaralan program on health, nutrition, and economic aspects.
Establishing a solid advocacy on this program not only in school, but also in the household and community could prove advantageous to those involved. Hence,
Gulayan sa Tahanan, a campaign aligned with Gulayan sa Paaralan, was designed.
Aimed to promote food sustainability in the household of each learner, Urbiztondo Integrated School announced its search for the best implementers of the
Gulayan sa Tahanan, one of the Brigada Eskwela campaigns. This activity was made possible through partnership with the Supreme Pupil Government and
Supreme Student Government and Parent-Teachers Association.
Last August 2021, a meeting was conducted and agreed upon that all parents in the Urbiztondo Integrated School will have their Gulayan sa Tahanan. The
participants of this activity were all students and parents who were expected to collaboratively make their own sustainable and productive garden at home. They
were directed to document their Gulayan sa Tahanan by taking pictures or videos and to submit the accumulated documentation of their own garden online. The
criteria for evaluation were set for the best Gulayan sa Tahanan 2021, which were: family participation (20%), type of home garden (10%), plants grown (30%),
quantity produced in the garden (30%), and overall appearance of the garden (10%). An on-site evaluation was conducted by the Urbiztondo Integrated School
principal, Dr. Sajid S. Eliang, and all the Master Teachers last October 14, 2021. The proponents of the said search, Elena Mae T. Arde and family for Elementary and
Jaypee Tapiador and family for Secondary, were able to choose the best Gulayan sa Tahanan implementer by the end of the evaluation period.
To recognize the valued efforts and active involvement of the participants, the Urbiztondo Integrated School conducted an awarding ceremony last October
25, 2021. The winning entries, as well as their coaches, were awarded with grocery items and health essentials. The list of winners are as follows:

The teachers and parents have shared support and cooperation, as well as determination, in cultivating the importance of vegetable gardening—growing your
own produce—to the students (the children) and showing them that even in the time of limits, such as what we have now, we can still do something important and
beneficial. The Gulayan sa Tahanan serves to foster a positive mindset to the students and their parents as it promotes an awareness on the benefits of planting
vegetables, fruits, and other crops. After all, these serve to nourish and strengthen the body, which might help in reducing the odds of one contracting the
coronavirus disease.
